Locked iPhone

I've been given an old iPhone by a very kind friend, and was hoping someone could help me out with it. It's currently locked to O2. Does that mean if I get myself a SIM only contract with O2, I could put that SIM card in the phone, and it would work? What about an O2 PAYG SIM? And is there any way to unlock the iphone, so I could use either my existing 3 SIM card, or a SIM card from another network?

O2 will unlock them for 15 quid. You can stick any sim in it then.0

I've just had a look on the O2 website, and found the section where you unlock your iphone. It asks what type of account I have, and what the phone number is, but since I didn't get the SIM card with the phone I don't have an account or a phone number. Is it still possible to unlock the phone?0
