And the other trick is to cover the floor in clutter and the other one I use is just not to look at the floor at all :rotfl:

Another way is to have the romantic lighting set so low you can no longer tell it's purple. i.e. Pitch Black.

Or is it a luminescent purple?

In reality...I agree with the others above - a real friend wouldn't dream of bringing up the subject of your carpets. I would never criticise a friend's carpets...I am their friend because I like them for who they are, not for their home decor!!! Sensibly, in your case, it makes sense to hold off for a few months until things are a little clearer money-wise.

However, have you considered remnants of carpet? I don't know what size your rooms are (it may not work if you have large rooms), but I have carpeted a couple of rooms in my house using remnants which are much cheaper than "proper" carpets that have prices worked out by the square foot/yard/metre. I have bought them from "local" little carpet shops, which in my experience work out cheaper than "the big guys". Beware hidden costs... When I re-did my hall, stairs and landing, CarpetRight quoted a much cheaper price per sq m for the carpet, but by the time they had added on their over-priced underlay and gripper-rod, plus charged a surcharge for fitting doorways (duh, its a "hall, stairs and landing", guys, so yes, I have 4 doors upstairs and 3 downstairs!!), delivery, plus a surcharge for fitting stairs, they were almost double the cost of our local guy who offered to fit his remnant for an additional £35 on top of the price of the carpet remnant price!!

Needless to say, we went with the local guy...and his service was fantastic!

P.S. I have to admit, this is a particular bug-bear of mine - my dad had a furniture/carpet shop, and I know just how "honest" and well-priced a "little guy" can be...!!

If you really really really wanted to spend that money on the carpets - would you be posting on here?

I can understand how depressed your scruffy worn out carpets make you, and no-one needs added misery when you are already struggling.

I'd go with the remnants suggestion. Where does it say that each room has to have the same flooring throughout?

You could even get end of rolls that fit up to within a foot or so of the skirting, and deep colour varnish the outside edges. No matter if they are concrete, it would look intentional!

You need to keep your spirits up, so if you can find the cheapest way to do it then treat yourself. We only live once.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

I have to disagree wth most of you!
Skintchick I would most likely go for the carpets.Im at this stage wth my kitchin as it is really falling to bits and if I leave it much longer then my money becomes worth less & less.
To be honest I would expect a real friend to tell it as it is but thats me & we are all different.

Yes, because this community has been my friend for a year now and has helped me through some hard times.

I value people;s opinions and as I am single and have no-one ti turn to in the real world, I come on here to see what people think about my plans in case they are reeeeely stoopid!

I really do want to spend the money, but wondered if it was sensible at this juncture, which general opinion seems to think is a no.

Oh, and I call it wages, not a paycheck (cheque) because the word/phrase paycheck is American in itself. I remember getting my wages in cash in a brown envelope when I was younger...
