I only found out about the job yesterday, and that comment was ages ago.
So how does this sound...?
You get the carpets only when you have new work (whether real temping or temp temping IYSWIM). Then the commentSo I can afford carpets, BUT if I don't get any work for a while I might wish I'd kept the money.
won't apply, and you will have rewarded yourself for your success.

Well a true friend would not be so hurtful. Ditch your new friend and keep the carpets until you have a new source of income.0 -
Imagine...you have no money left, no job and beautiful carpets. You have to pay your mortgage, will the pleasure from the carpets outweigh the stress of possible eviction/repossesion? Will these magic carpets feed you. Now is not the time to buy carpets. When you have a job again, treat yourself to the new carpets after paycheck 2 or 3.0

Or what about ripping the carpets up and having trendy floorboards?0

I have concrete floors, not floorboards.
And I won't have a 'paycheck' (since when were we Amercian on here?) as I am freelance.

What is it then? I am not American and I call it paycheck. Maybe its just more and more American vernacular creeping into everyday language via the culture they export through their movies, big conglomerates and media?0

I have to agree with this. Your friend might have thought it but should have never said it to your face.
All my carpets need replacing. But just can't afford it. Up stairs in all three bedrooms we have very tasteful light and dark purple with swirls on it  With brown stains on it from smoking and no underlay.
I will not pay out of my savings as I have to replace my savings from last
year from having the central heating put in and moving.
So going to be a long time before I get replacements.

These things do take time. You can have everything at once, but then you're declared bankrupt and have them all taken away. Slow and steady and measured is the key."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

I wear sunglasses in doors most of the time so I can't see the horrible colour :rotfl:
And the other trick is to cover the floor in clutter and the other one I use is just not to look at the floor at all :rotfl:
