Visa debit card paying for a large purchase

I'm buying a car they accept debit cards as payment, I know its not secure but i know the person who I'm paying and thats not what I'm asking.

I want to pay £15,000 using my debit card I intend to go into a branch and tell them I will be making this payment so hopefully they can set it so its allowed and does not get stopped.

Has anyone paid a lot using their debit card and if so did they check with their bank first or did it get rejected?

Yes, paid £25k on my debit card for a car purchase. I told the bank in advance and it needed authorisation on the day through HSBC merchant services.

    No problems at all.

Thanks for the reply puts my mind at rest.

What do you mean by having to use HSBC's merchant services, did that mean you had to ring them and confirm?

I paid about £6000 for my last car by debit card without telling the bank first. Obviously, the funds were in the account, but it went through without a hitch.

Quite happily put through a £10,000 transaction on a Visa debit. Went straight through with no bother at all.

No, they rang the garage and asked to speak to me. After going through a basic security routine, passed back to the garage and they asked the garage to enter an authorisation number into the machine.

I know you say "i know the person who I'm paying", but why not pay a few pounds using a credit card to give you Section 75 protection just in case anything goes wrong down the line?

It's not going to be a 'few pounds' though - a few hundred extra more likely

What will happen is the garage will put the transaction through their machine - once you have entered your PIN it will either authorise it immediately, or tell the merchant to ring for authorisation. The card company will ask him a few questions, and may or may not want to talk to you as well, and then give him an authorisation code. Garages will be quite used to it, it will be 'normal' to them.

There's probably no need to tell your bank - maybe just ask to allay any worries you may have. The limit above which they have to ring will vary - you can't predict it.

What doe you mean by "a few hundred extra more likely?

    What is the extra for?

If you pay ANYTHING on a CC, then you are covered under S75 for the whole amount of the transaction, from WHICH ADVICE;-
"However, you don’t have to have paid the full amount on your credit card – the card company is liable even if you made only part of the payment (a deposit, say) on your card. And this part-payment can be as little as £1. It is the value of the goods you are buying that is key, not the amount paid on the card."

I mean that the car dealer is likely to charge 3% (to take an actual example I know about - it may vary obviously) extra to accept payment by credit card. £450 on £15000. The extra is to cover part/all of the fee the CC company will charge him on a transaction of that size.

Agree about just paying part payment on the CC - the dealer is unlikely to charge for this.
