debt collector letter for previous owners

  • Just reseal it, write 'return to sender' on it.

I dutifully sent back SEVEN letters in a row from the same people to a previous occupant, and they just kept on sending them.

Eventually I did a Google search on the return address. Turned out to be some debt collection arm of Capita, so I emailed them with a stern request that they desist, and they duly did.

I'm sorry you're taking my comments in that way but I think some of the comments in this thread are inaccurate, scaremongering, and have not been backed up by any evidence.

The fact is that the credit record of any previous occupant of a house will not affect the current occupants, and in the unlikely event that anyone arrives at the house trying to contact the previous occupant, you will not be required to prove who you are to get rid of them.

I've only just noticed this post. I think what doesn't help is people being given potentially worrying incorrect information without any facts to back it up.

I do not give inaccurate information and I have not been scaremongering - everything I have said is fact - please stop this personal attack on me or I will have to report you. This is not the manner that these boards are supposed to be posted under. I find you comments to me most offensive towards me and my DD.

Blimey all I did was ask some questions to try to clarify if the mobile phone company had said why they had to run further checks (which you didn't answer), and why we thought people might be required to prove their identity when the person who called at your house left without asking for any proof of identity.

Please feel free to report any personal attacks I've made on you as that certainly wasn't my intention.

I used to get loads of letters for previous tenants and even had a debt collector come to my door once from Moorcroft for a previous tenant. The one that came to the door asked me for my rent book (council flat) to prove that I was now living at the flat and that was the last I heard from them. Other times when letters have arrived that looked official, I have opened them too after what happened with the door to door guy. I always phone them up and say my 2 yr old opened them by accident and that I was ringing to let them know that the person no longer lived here, and then gave them the number of the rental agency I was through to ask if they knew where they had gone to next. I never had a problem after that and the letters stopped coming.
