    Graham, white flag.

why don't you use your winnings to pay off as much as your mortgage as possible (If it lets you)
Then remortgage (if you can without penalty) over the same term you are currently on.
Thus lowering your outgoings and possibly you to over pay or save more again.

Because I want some cash accesible. No one knows what is round the corner. Houses are not the most important thing in life, IMO.

I was very lucky to have got what I got. Dunno why it was bought up really, as as I have found out before now, this kind of thing just creates anger in other people, which is why I don't generally tell anyone (and I get the feeling it was used in this case in this way). It can be used against you in certain situations, and creates dislike. I only have a few months salary in cash. Rest is in the house.

Just leave three or 6 months money. In reallity that should be enough for most situations.
Then like I said you could either overpay or save again if you wanted.
I agree a house is not the most important thing in life that is why paying it of early is possibly one of the best things you can do to live a good life.
Don't forget overpaying usually gives you some breathing space with lenders if you get in to difficulty in the future.

Sorry, seen you edit. In that case yes there would be no point paying that off as you need a kitty.

So my wife and I have used Patel's Fertil-U-Like clinic in order to have children. The bills were astronomical, owing to what the Doctor said were my challenging requirements.

Yes, I saw that place on Panorama, doctor got caught inseminating victims patients with his own "seed".

Do the kids have an unexplained fondness for curry?

You not buy him an icecream, bucket and spade and inflatable dolpin then? :p

I don't think kids are as expensive as all these studies say, but maybe I'm just mean :D

ETA: I have spent well over a grand this (school) year so far just on trips & clubs

I no longer have those costs, however, home ed isn't necessarily a cheap alternative

I also agree, that children don't have to be as expensive as the studies suggest :)

I've spotted a flaw in this. Due to an accident at work I have been unable to.. ahem.. reproduce in the traditional manner. So my wife and I have used Patel's Fertil-U-Like clinic in order to have children. The bills were astronomical, owing to what the Doctor said were my challenging requirements. So it's not that simple Hamish. Check your facts first mate.

Couldn`t you use a turkey baster like everyone else? Very MSE you know

Oh so the average person mainly holidays in the UK and hires a 4 bed property even when they have no kids. Next you will tell me that the average person always holiday in the school holidays even when they have no kids of school age.

You will find most of the lowest price holiday homes still have sleeping space for over 4 occupants (5-6 usualy)
AFIK Most people in manufacturing and anyone to do with schools do so yes I dare say people do holiday in the UK during school holidays even if they don't have kids.
For one reason most of our "summer" is between Late June and mid August (the school summer holidays). :p

Give up you are talking rubbish. The average holdiay for a couple without kids costs alot less than with kids.

Check the prices of any holiday a few weeks before or after the school holidays or either side of the various half terms.

What so the dates for manufacturing holidays are rubbish are they also for anyone related to education?
Far more people have set holiday dates than you imagine by the looks of it.

The extra cost of holidaying with a child in reality is paying for its food and what ever you do with it when holidaying in the UK that is all.

PS you can still book holidays in term time if you write to the school. Now who's talking rubbish. (but not advisable when in secondary school)

I see you missed the point on accomodation size though. :)

1300+ for a family of 4 after the school holidays in worse accomodation. Its even more expensive if you go abroad.

As for writing to the school regarding getting time off in term time only if for an important reason and getting a cheaper holiday does not count!

Also you still want to tell me that average adult without kids has too take their holiday in the school holidays!
