Another take on 'affordability'.

From what I see on this thread is even though I earn over the average wage I spend less than the average person.
It seems like may want.
A new laptop every year.
2 Reasonably high cost cars.
2-3 holidays abroad even after having children.
Taken out of context again.
No one has mentioned anything about laptops apart from me. And that was just saying "maybe they will want one one day". I never mentioned anything about frequency. We are all typing on computers now though, which we had to buy at some point.
No one has mentioned anything about the costs of the cars. Infact, I only factorerd in 3k to upgrade. Hardly high costs.
No one has mentioned 2-3 holidays a year, anywhere.0 -
If you have a student loan and instead of the £22k you earn £23k I think you will have to pay £720 a year off your student loan so will still be better off that the person who didnt go to university and earns £22k.0

the point of the thread is that it can be done.
If you have children you cut your cloth to fit. If you feel you have to take them to the other side of the world twice a year for a good time it's up to you.
But don't complain about the cost most kids are just happy to have both parents together for the week.
It just seems like people want more and no matter what they have it should have no impact on their spending power and what they had before. We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung

I never start threads on here, but I'm stuffed full of curry and the best thing on the telly seems to be Chris Moyles Quiz Night (how can you have 1,625 channels and end up with this?). Anyway, just as another take on the affordability thing, as I like causing trouble...
Have you noticed how the progs that are normally 30 mins on Terrestrial tv become 40 minutes on Sky to fit all the adverts in, gets worse later on  Decided not paying for that crap I am going to cancel Sky.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. The incredible negativity on this forum is illustrated perfectly by this somewhat brilliant thread. It has all played out almost exactly as I would have guessed after reading the first post.
Hmmmmmmm, yes, a nice scenario in the OP, however, obviously shazney will have a horiffic accident and her legs will be chopped off bringing her income down a fair bit. then she will probably go blind and be really stuck. Then the cars will explode, they will be the victims of robbery and their house will at some point no doubt set on fire.
It's clear that they could never realistically afford a house at all to be honest.0 -

Of they could but its not a realistic scenario. Something people do not seem to get. There would be a massive effect on the economy if the majority of the young started living as the OP suggests.
Whether people can understand or not has no relation to may or may not happen to them down the road and whether they go blind or not.
The simple fact is the economy has been built over the last few years on lots of debt and if you just change peoples habits there would be trouble. Why do you think everyones being encouraged to spend banks being told to lend even though few actually want the money or can afford to borrow it.0 -

Many want it to stay this way. So long as it's not them getting ever more into debt, then this is fine. It's all about others getting further into debt, paying more and more, to keep the assets of others up.
The argument for it staying this way is that too many people would lose their asset wealth and this would cause huge problems. Doesn;t matter about the problems already existing it seems.
It's bizzare that you hardly ever get the two groups of people agree on anything.
I guess cleaver could say "hang on a min, thats what you are doing" when I say this. But when others have to take your explanation of your reasoning for disagreeing completely out of context to make their point, I personally think the argument has been won. Not the argument over the OP. But the argument between the two sides of the fence.0 -

A very nice largish G and T makes me respond here.
I think most things financially are possible though not necessarily likely. Its all a matter of priority.
Me and hubby have always had way way less then the average incomes but we like in a paid for house above the average price.
We would never sit and complain to a TV company that the heating costs are ridiculous this winter whilst wearing a short sleeved t shirt. Feed a small child strawberrys out of season whilst telling (probably) the same TV company that we can`t afford our 110% mortgage.
Sadly we could never reclaim unfair bank charges because we never paid them.
So all things are possible for Shaznay (sp) and her partner. And no we are not miserable tight wads - a decent hoilday is a high priority around here.0
