Nehalems aren't particularly low TDP - the current crop have the same TDP range (95-130W) as the power-hungry Pentium Ds from back in the day. You're thinking of the previous generation (the Core2Duo/Core2Quads) which generally had lower TDPs of 65W.
The new Nehalem-based i processors are pretty greedy in terms of power consumption, which is why they suck so much for laptops.

I'm not talking about Nehalem i CPU's, I'm referring to the Xeons. You can use them inside a desktop case with no problems, all you need is the appropriate motherboard.

My response was merely about the CPUs. I wasn't sure if it was regarding as one of the AMDs "energy efficient" models or not.

The PC is still a starter PC in terms of its a solid all round build for those who are looking for a first time buy

The Aldi/Medion forum hasn't been too enthusiastic about the new offering, because when you factor in a monitor and some decent speakers it's actually quite expensive. I couldn't find whether the Windows 7 Home Premium was 32-bit or 64-bit - if the former, then the "Huge 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM" is 25% wasted...

Medion normally pre-install the 32 bit version but supply both 32 & 64 bit DVDs in the package.

I do prefer the eBay approach myself though - plenty of second hand Core 2 Quads on there, which owners are selling to upgrade to a different platform, the namely i7's. Most of them were built with gaming in mind and you can see they've used top quality components like a good motherboard, RAM etc, but if you buy new from a place like Aldi then how do you know what's actually in there? Unbranded RAM? Budget motherboard? Probably. A computer can be made to look good on paper but not so good in real life. You get a better machine for less money second hand and you can see it working beforehand when you collect.

I don't think that the average non techie type person would really care about that.

Buying second hand also means that you probably won't get a warranty - fair enough if you feel comfortable with tinkering with hardware & software, but for the non techie type then the warranty could be beneficial if the machine breaks down.

However Medion give the PC a 3 year guarantee, which is one of big the advantages for us non-techies.

Found this, (which is a automatic translation from German so the English is a bit quaint!) and they seem to like it!

Poster above is correct, for the average "non-techie" who just wants a PC that does the job it's perfectly fine and up to spec with most modern PC's

When you get an enthusiast it will be below spec in terms of hardware. It uses older technology and most likely slower technology.

It's why I prefer to custom-build my PC's. More satisfaction and I know exactly what's going in them so there would be no crappy parts.

For the normal home consumer however it's a great buy because it's got enough power to do the job

That looks fab - loads of hard disk and memory. I'd definitely go for one at that price if I was in the market for one (I just bought a laptop yesterday though!) :D

For someone that seems to know so little about computers you like making very sweeping statements. What is the older technology are you referring to?

Not older, below par. Was a typo as I hadn't fully read the technology used inside the computer. Judging by the price I'm forming an opinion the components will be budget ones to keep the prices low. It mentions no details of the memory speed, or what the spindle speed or hard drive cache size is. As an enthusiast I would prefer to know the exact specifics of each component rather than hyped up sales figures.

You statements seem to be very derogatory towards me, do you have an issue with me?

You know nothing about my technical ability nor experience with computers yet your posts seem to be nit picking over the slightest remarks I have made over factual errors through misreading the hardware information. Just because I don't prefer to know the ins and outs of the hardware is by no means a way to judge my technical knowledge

I'll leave you to debate in this topic as much as you want, so I can spend my time replying to other topics

    Cheerio :)
