You're on job seekers, but you don't want to do anything to seek a job.

Wow... No wonder employers hire immigrants.

you misunderstand. i think enough people have posted here to describe what these meetings consist of. not being keen on going to one doesnt automatically mean you dont want to try and get a job. no-one has advised anyone to not attend.

I know - I am not the one asking the question!

It's a direction, 1 week fixed sanction not variable up to 26 weeks.

someone on flexible new deal got sanctioned the other day because they didnt turn up for a meeting with their personal career coach. the reason they didnt turn up was because they had a bereavement. does the jobcentre have anything in place to stop providers abusing the system by treating people like this? what protection do people have while on flexible new deal?

Did the person ring and explain?

If the person was in employment AND the deceased was a close relative, they would have to ring and explain why they would not be at work.

They would then (depending on policies at work) might get a day off to attend the funeral, or a few days if they have to arrange the funeral. Pay would be at the discretion of the employer.

So, getting a sanction for not applying (without knowing who died, relation, for how long they missed) seems reasonable.

the impression i got was that they had phoned to tell them but didnt get to speak to their personal career coach and whoever took the message didnt pass it on. his pcc was like oh well i've already sanctioned him. she didnt care at all. this person is my pcc as well.
there is an interesting difference with the way things are done now. with the old new deal people would get sacked off the course and then the jobcentre would sanction them. now the provider sanctions them and they dont get sacked off the course. so therefore still have to keep seeing their pcc once a fortnight. i am curious how many pcc get their heads knocked off.
  • ty for replies, but could someone explain how long i would lose benefit for if i dont attend in the end please.. is it 1week onlyor could it be more?

Its only an hour which TBH isnt a particularly long time especially if you not working and have the rest of the week to yourself. Ive been on it and I would completely agree its a waste of time unless you are a complete half wit but it doesnt look good for you not to attend without a valid reason. Im sure they dont pay you for the fortnight you are due but then backdate it providing you given them a valid enough reason for not attending and pay the backdated amount on the next payment due date.

and to add to this, whether you had a good reason to miss it or not they will still just rearrange it for another time. so you cant get out of it.
