Web hosting

I’m looking at buying a domain name and finding a hosting company but don’t seem to be able to find a definitive comparison site online. There seems to be several dodgy companies out there. For example, justhost.com and supergreen.com seem to be the same people. As are hostclear.com. I’m looking for a cheap, user friendly web domain/host provider where I can pay monthly. Any ideas?

There are plenty of web hosting comparison sites out there. I'd read reviews and base my decision on that, along with hosting specifications, of course.
I had my sites hosted by Hostroute but they had absolutely rubish support. They used to turn one of my websites off because it was taking too much bandwidth - the site was basically very popular, perhaps one of the most visited on their shared server. They could have emailed me and offer me VPS or similar solution - instead they'd just turn the site off and wouldn't even bother emailing me about it.
I have a managed VPS hosting now with MOD VPS and I can't fault them.
You probably know that but you can host your UK site anywhere in the world. I find web hosting in the USA much cheaper than in the UK - sometimes even as much as half price for the same package.0 -
I'd avoid any host that provides unlimited anything for a low price - they would be over-selling, which isn't too good
Nothing wrong with UK hosted websites - they typically would load up quicker since the servers will be located within the UK0 -
I've found Cheap Domain Names which offers domain and hosting for £4.99 a month. Anyone know them? Its a Nomesco company.0

I host a couple of sites with a company called Baxter Media. It moved to them from Fasthosts when the owner set up the company a few years ago.
He's always happy to help and the service is great. I know they say you get what you pay for, but even though they are extremely cheap I've never had any problems in the 2 years i've been with them.
I do know the chap who owns but only distantly and other than that have nothing to do with the company.0 -
OK. The answer here is TSO Host at https://www.tsohost.co.uk
I run about 80 sites there and they are without question, the finest company I've ever dealt with.
Just a two-man band, Darren and Adam, but they are VERY good.

Bluehost.com are fantastic in every sense for me - no downtime, unlimited webspace and bandwidth and cheap .com domains. All this whilst taking all the strain by installing Wordpress plugins etc at the touch of a button.0

Until mid last year, I had used Qiq for the previous 3 years - Cheap as chips, but fully featured and support is pretty good. Costs from £19.99 PER YEAR:

It's one of the little ones, but I had no complaints at all.

I've used these people for a few years. No problems.
