Split Screen PC Gaming

This is half rant half question I suppose.
Why is it that modern PC games, most of which are basically identical to their console counterparts, seem to have split screen options disabled?
I got SF4 for the PC and enjoyed it so much that I bought a second XBox for Windows controller so my mates can play around the same computer and it works brilliantly.
But when I looked into other PC games where I can use 2 controllers I found almost nothing. It seems standard policy to disable the split screen functions for the PC releases of games and I just cant figure out why.
Anyone else find this or am I going mad?

Probably becasue most PC ganers are sad lonely creatures without friends.

I guess PC's tend to be used in solitrary way, they tend to be on a desk so are not so conducive to multiplayer whereas it's much easier to play multiplayer games on a TV in a living room. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

Yeah, historically PC gamers have tended to be like that, but I feel that the lines now are blurring:
Consoles can online game in much the same way as PCs and PCs can now utalize multiple controllers in much the same way as consoles. Some games like Borderlands include split screen modes within the code but is actually disabled in the PC version. A user mod can often switch it back on!
Why block a perfectly good function if it isn't hurting anyone?
My PC is far more powerful than any console so I just don't get it. Bah. :mad:0 -
I do agree that I can't see any point in actually turning it off if the code already exists. It's my problem, it's my problem

It'll certainly make life easier for chinese gold farmers.... and there might be an issue if split screen users could join opposite teams and 'spy' / sabotage the opposition but for 'local' networked games and online co-op play can't really see any good reason not to enable it.....0 -
I'd love to see a game like Fallout 3 with a split screen co-op mode or something like Dragon Age Origins with two people controlling the party.
Also, racing games are great fun in split screen and I've got a 21" widescreen monitor to do it on.
Come on PC game devs, make it happen!0 -
Hmm thinking about it might be possible to do 'something' with multiple virtual machines on the same desktop box but sounds very fiddly and a recipe for things to conflict....
multiple desktop boxes and a fancy PinP TV might do something along similar lines too but yes it should be far far easier than that
Meantime I guess we're stuck with online and LAN stuff.....0 -
I don't know about you lot but I'm very protective over who uses my PC.
And anyway, why should I share my memory and graphics bandwidth. Get your own PC and stay away from mine.......

Games like Need For Speed which are much more fun when you are racing against mates, have their split screen modes disabled on their PC versions. It's so annoying, why should I be able to play 4-player split screen on my PS3 but only single player (or crappy laggy internet multiplayer) on my PC?
Unfortunately it looks like PC gaming is going in the opposite direction - rather than reintroducing split screen gaming, they are introducing technologies like Eyefinity which puts your single player screen across multiple monitors. So even if you have 6 monitors connected to your PC you will still only be able to play single player, rather than having a monitor or two for each player. Ridiculous. Look at this poor girl having to watch helplessly while her brother from another mother has all the fun

Someone needs to get the DIY going and turn that into one huge, edgeless panel
