Citronella fly spray is going to be banned from sale from August 31st this year. I have never had a problem with it and have found a favourite brand, my only dispair has been the cost of £9.99 for a 1lt bottle, but now, because of this new law, my local saddlers have been selling it off at £2.99 a bottle.

Check out your local dealers, they may well be doing the same.

Just to clarify, the sale of comercially manufactured citronella fly sprays is going to be banned. You should still be able to get the pure oil and make up your own.

Mix some citronella oil with some Avon Skin so soft and water in a mister bottle. makes an effective fly spray.
wood shavings from saw mills etc - a word of warning - some hard woods can cause reactions. use soft wood if possible. Our local guy sells shavings a £2per large bag - delivered!

Countrywide stores have a sale on at the moment - some decent bargains if your quick.

yes, you can make your own fly repellent:

    citronella oil (from a chemist)
    black tea
small amount of washing up liquid

Instead of buying expensive mane and tail conditioner/detangler - mix 1/3 water, 1/3 baby oil and 1/3 conditioner. Use in a spray bottle. I haven't tried this one myself but got it from a horsey forum and intend to give it a try.
    .

Great tip! These detanglers cost a small fortune!

The biggest money saver I found was to buy my hay at places advertised on Friday ad instead of having hay delivered by the hay man:p

Touch of silver shampoo for grey horses insted of expensive horsey ones:T

Have only two front shoes on insted of all 4:T

sacks of carrotts instead of small bags:T

I can't think of anymore but I know there are loads:confused:
  • Someone mentioned the avon skin so soft already - it's the dry oil in blue that is the best fly repellant and is a great de-tangler - bit pricey at a fiver but is often on offer at around £2 and check the vouchers thread for avon savings ;)
