Moneysaving For Horse Owners

I have noticed a few horse owners on the site recently and wondered if we could share our ideas for keeping our expensive animals in the chaepest way.
I bought my horse due to saving money on my bills due to :money: .
Please can we offer any tips for saving money. also we can post when we know where there are sales.

Right, here goes.
My first tip is for http://www.frogpool.com/. I got a Thermatex rug and a Rambo Sweetitch Hoody at a much better price after searching around. They are very quick to deliver and have a monthly competition to win stuff. I won a huge grooming kit.

Sudocrem - total sunblock for horses with pink noses and waterproof!

Instead of buying expensive mane and tail conditioner/detangler - mix 1/3 water, 1/3 baby oil and 1/3 conditioner. Use in a spray bottle. I haven't tried this one myself but got it from a horsey forum and intend to give it a try.

Baby wipes - excellent for cleaning all over a horse and for removing stable stains.

Can't think of any more at the moment.

pine disinfectant is supposed to help stop greedy horses pigging their beds. Is cheaper than stinky jeyes fluid aswell :D

Oooh yeah I buy my water buckets from Tesco's cos they are cheaper. Tesco & Aldi have started selling items such as haynets, brushes, headcollars & ropes plus some riding gear :j

Falcon do fantastic feed - they are only in West Sussex / Surrey at the minute but I'm sure they'll grow - they do own brew garlic and soya oil etc and their molychop is only £3 for a decent size bag.

  • You guys are so lucky, wish I could afford a horse, cant even afford a £15 a week hack!! Good on you for making the savings to afford it.I'd have to sell my house and share the stable!
Witch hazel as fly repellant...A tin of stout once a week in winter feed seemed a good tonic too, not exactly moneysaving but cheaper than supplements.Happy riding.
RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

We always use furniture polish too! - any silicon based polish works.

If you have a grey whose tail has gone a bit brown, vanish works wonders! More of a tip than a money saver.

Also on a grooming theme, I've found that scrubbing brushes, hairbrushes etc are as good as if not better than dandy brushes and curry combs.

If you know of a factory that uses wood then they are likely to have wood shavings and as they would probably have to throw them away anyway they might let you have them cheap/free....worth a try, if you dont ask you dont get!! You just have to be careful that they dont sweep up into the shavings otherwise it might have nails etc in. My Dad sells them for 50p per dustbin bag.

Citronella fly spray is going to be banned from sale from August 31st this year. I have never had a problem with it and have found a favourite brand, my only dispair has been the cost of £9.99 for a 1lt bottle, but now, because of this new law, my local saddlers have been selling it off at £2.99 a bottle.

Check out your local dealers, they may well be doing the same.
