Council Tax - whats yours and do you think it a good system?

No I said contribution based on capita and discounts based on affordability.
As part of a family myself, I don't think a couple should pay as much as me it is disproportional to use of service.
Or indeed should a person with 4 adults and 4 children living in a house.
It'd be far too complicated a system to operate - look at the tax credits fiasco! How would local authorities get the information on income to work out affordability with no information on income?
Why not just have a local income tax which is contribution based, uses HMRC, everyone who works pays it, and it is based on affordability. I know it isn't perfect as people who don't work don't pay, but it seems a better system to me than either poll tax or council tax.0 -
Just under 2k, gone up just over 6 quid per month.0

Most probably, I just find it a bit non nonsensical. (especially seeing they are looking to introduce some charges on useage EG waste)
PS Band F Just under £2K and this year was nearly a 2.5% increase.
Maggie obviously thought the same as you but all that produced was riots. I agree council tax doesn’t seem a good way of doing it and I would personally prefer local income tax but I don’t think you will ever find a solution, which makes everybody happy.0 -

Because it is another nail in the coffin of getting out of this benefits cycle.
My childhood was poor but nothing made me want to do better than knowing there was no benefit to not working.
Also you said my idea is hard to work, what about bonuses change of circumstances etc etc.
They would have to run their own system so an income based system would be more hellish when you have to take so many variables in to account.
Then be evaluated at the end of each year to work out if the charges were correct and set a new charge based on your previous years earnings.:eek:0 -

TBF I think the reason it caused riots was because it was not thought threw enough before bringing it in to place.
I would be interested to see the basics of poll tax if anyone has them.
But your last comment is true, no taxes make people happy.0 -
Oh well, a shade under £2K here, an increase of 3.5%.
So much for the low inflation figures then!
I see the Police contribution is up 7.5%. Perhaps they are planning a special ball this year....0 -
Band E - just shy of £1800
Appeal with the Valuation Office as 6 of my neighbours have similar sized rooms and gardens yet they are on Band D which is £300 cheaper. 5 weeks into a possible 4 month wait whilst they chew the fat.0 -
It would be nice to get a rebate if you don't use certain sevices
eg library, childrens education, council run gym, rubbish tip etc.0 -
Where I live we won council tax rebates totalling about £110,000. AIUI it was the biggest ever appeal in this area. I appealed first (with help from the Council Tax rebanding thread), won, my neighbours did the same, then the VOA caved in and rebanded everyone - we worked together as a community and it was quite clear we'd hit them with appeals until they did.

I think that it would be fairer if council tax was abolished and it was all paid by income taxBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
