  • This is worrying really..........how can you tell for sure that you are on the system then? I dialled the number, heard the message and followed the instructions.

One to put down to (a mysterious) experience then (thankfully, only a £1 or so experience).

Bearing in mind that using any dial-through provider could incur BT's minimum call charge if the target number is engaged, why not change to using www.18185.co.uk for future such calls? They may charge 1p a minute not the ½p you were hoping for but there's no charge if you get an engaged tone (and you could still chat for an hour for only 64p).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I will give it another go this evening and see what happens. Thanks so much everyone for your useful replies.

BT appear to have wrongly charged you @ 'g10' rate - 3p/minute incl. VAT because £1.02 + VAT = £1.1985.
We've established BT didn't mischarge you but, as they charged only 3p/minute, you must have the International Add-On (£3 extra per quarter).

Without that International Opton, it would have cost 16½p/minute (£6.60 for 40 minutes) evenings & weekends or 18½p/minute (£7.20 for 40 minutes) peak!
