I'm sorry, but please don't recommend people going on a prepay meter. No matter what you budget, you will always pay more for your utilties and they are nearly impossible to remove.

Which is why I dont want one. Ive had one before and it was awful!

Anyway Ive rearranged my DD for eon for the 15th so I can pay my CT on Tuesday :j I really do not want to get behind with CT ever again :)

Yes, the price per unit is higher, however I found this easier to manage personally.
I didn't have any problem having the meter removed although I must say it was some years ago.
I didn't recommend it, I merely recounted my own personal experience.
    Apologies if this appeared misleading.

They always do council tax over 10 months.

We pay ours over 12months...maybe it just depends on the local authority as to whether you can pay over 12months?

I pay more per unit, but use far fewer units than I did before I was on a meter, so pay less overall, and use less energy, which has to be a good thing.

mine used to be 11 months (you had march off) but if you got behind they'd spread it over to 12.

It depends on the authority, ours will allow you to spread the cost to 12 months on request - which really i think most council should use their commom sense and allow this - but i know they dont have to. They will receive the money at the end of the day. Personally if the customer has been paying and is on DD then why force them to make payments they will struggle with ( but thats my personal opinion). Have you considered writing to them , maybe give them a breakdown of your budget and explain that it will cause you difficulty meeting the payments. They are under no obligation to do this but it may help.

My current council will not allow anyone (benefits or not) to pay council tax over 12 months, neither did my old council.

I see it all the time mentioned in soa's as a suggestion to repay over 12 months, but very few council allow it. I think it would be a useful tool if maybe some at MSE towers/board guide could draw up a list of councils that do permit payment over 12 months and then the peeps could direct the newbie poster to that page via a link.

Why is it some councils allow it and others not? The financial year is the same for every council, it doesn't seem fair, especially as some people are struggling with outgoings at the moment, it would ease the pressure each month a wee bit if everyone could opt for a 12 month repayment plan if you so wished.

My (uneducated) guess would be that it depends on the revenue each council currently receive in council tax balanced against the amount they spend chasing up non-payment.

I say this because my council, reputedly, has a high rate of non-payment. They allow you to pay in a variety of different ways, including over 12 months by DD. I guess it's because it increases their chance of receiving payment and reduces their costs in the long term, while costing them little to set up in the short term.
