New Council Tax bill only over 10 months council wont extend to 12

Is this right? Im in arears (thanks to everyone for advice on that) and Im paying that back at £100 p/month until January 2011.

I got the new bill today and noticed that it only goes up to January, with monthly installments of £124

I rang to see if they could extend it to March and the girl said no. She didnt even take my name/acc number - she just said they were only doing it up until Jan.

I now have 2 weeks to get together £124. Looks like I cant pay eon this month :(

They always do council tax over 10 months. Can you eBay stuff to find the cash? Get some extra work? Do some cleaning or something? What about phoning eon and asking for time to pay them, explaining the situation?

    Sorry i can;t help much.

Legally the stautory instalment plan is for 10 payments from April to Jan, the council can vary this but they are under no obligation.

Thanks for the help - Ive been ebaying quite a bit recently but have had a bad paypal experience with a buyer which has put me off - plus I only really have CDs to sell, I dont have much of value.

Im going to pay eon on 1st, as planned and fill in hte DD form for council tax, and pay on 24th april, that way I have a few more weeks.

I just dont want to get any further behind with CT and I really need to start paying eon cos I really cant live with a prepayment meter

Dont get behind with your CT at all, if you default on CT you will lose the right to
pay by installment and they will demand the whole year CT all at once.

Are you or your OH on benefits at all, they will move you to 12 months if you are.

I found a prepayment meter really good when I was digging myself out of debt. It really helped me budget and monitor my usage closely. Hoping you manage to squeak by, been there myself more times than I can tell you.

It depends on the local authority.

Agreed, our local authority will only extend to 12 months in cases where there are arrears or problems with benefits. For example I came off income support in november and became liable for council tax, but they allowed me to spread the remaining payments until March. However for the new bill I have to pay over 10. As far as I'm aware it's because they start doing their accounts from january and preparing the new year's budget which is obviously heavily reliant on council tax.

Walsall will let you have the payments over 12 months as long as you request it before the end of January for the next financila year

I'm sorry, but please don't recommend people going on a prepay meter. No matter what you budget, you will always pay more for your utilties and they are nearly impossible to remove.
