  • Calm down - go on the bank's website and see what you have to do to start a formal complaint.

(Did you get the letter? Did you do anything about it?)

If you come to an agreement to repay the overdraft they should transfer back a large proportion of what they have taken from you.

I think the first thing to do is to get all your benefits paid into a separate bank account where you have no debt. I would seek CAB advice straight after too.

This will stop the bank from keeping every penny you have/get.

First thing in the morning get to the nearest high street and open yourself a new account with a bank not connected to yours, a basic account for now will probably be the best as they don't require the same credit checks and are usually a little quicker to open. If you open another account with Halifax they can and will raid it.

Phone the benefits people and ask them to put all your payments on hold until you have your new account details.

Phone all the people you have DD's with, explain you need to cancel because you're changing bank accounts and will set them up again as soon as you have your new details.

Once you've got yourself straight make arrangement to pay the rest of the OD back at a level you can afford.

As peachyprice said, make sure the banks are not connected, for example Natwest and RBS obviously are.

That is step 1, step 2 seek CAB advice. Free advice from CAB is better than none.

    I wish you luck.

They would say that! All high street banks to basic accounts designed specifically for when it's all gone t1ts up.

Try Co-op, they're pretty good with people with a less than perfect history. If you've lived at your address long enough and they can check your ID they can open a Cashminer account over the phone tomorrow, if it goes through OK you should have your new details by next week.

As you're with Halifax/HBOS, I'd avoid Lloyds TSB (who took them over).
