No offence taken by me! :D

The terracotta thing was a pain to plant up in the first place, a pain to water effectively, and I was thinking of using it for herbs that prefer dryer conditions but then I just had another thought, could use it for my collection of semperviva (? sp). Actually I think I prefer that idea to using it for herbs.

  • I havent had any success with strawberry planters and have done better with ordinary pots. But these might be of a different design. I also have a herb planter of a similar design and dont use this either! They are both tricky to plant up and water.

Herbs are much better suited to it. And it would look lovely.

The Mediterranean herbs we normally grow like dry, stoney, alkaline ground. They'll love it if you add some chalky rocks, or all the stones you end up removing from beds and some wood ash if you can get it.

So the general consensus is that strawberry plants grow fine in pots and those terracotta strawberry planters you see everywhere are a bit useless?

One plant to a medium size pot I assume and preferrably dont buy the plants if they have buds but definitely not if they are already flowering? Will the plants fruit all season or do you have to have younger plants up and coming to ensure a long season? Would they prefer to be in the greenhouse permanently or should I put the pots out on the ornamental stones outside with the thought that this will deter adventourous bugs? Hmmm but probably not the adventourous toddler on second thoughts.

TIA I've never grown any kind of fruit before... unless you count tom's I guess!

I bought some stacking strawberry planters -each planter has four sections - from our local 99p shop. Seemed like a good buy and hopefully won't be as thirsty and inefficient and difficult to water, as my terracotta strawberry pot which I am turning into a herb planter.

(I'm hoping they were a good buy...)

Are they like these that someone is selling on ebay?

OMG, how daft do I feel now. I bought 3 of these last year from Poundland, I didnt realise that were stackable or for strawberries.
I spent many days trying to find plant pots that actually fitted inside them properly (and failed).
Love the idea of using them for herbs though :T

They're very similar - but they have four 'pots' per layer.

    That's even better then.

So you get 3 x pots for 99p or 99p per layer?

There are some better ones on Ebay which have an inbuilt reservoir which will save on watering if we have a dry spell.

The 99p shop ones are very flimsey and may not last more than a season - thinner than flowerpots.....However great if you are on a tight budget
