99p Shop strawberry planters

I bought some stacking strawberry planters -each planter has four sections - from our local 99p shop. Seemed like a good buy and hopefully won't be as thirsty and inefficient and difficult to water, as my terracotta strawberry pot which I am turning into a herb planter.
(I'm hoping they were a good buy...)

Strawberry planters are one of those things that don't work/aren't needed, but are sold to newbies who think that's what they need, because they see them for sale everywhere.
Strawberries are no different to other plants. They grow best in the ground, but still well in containers. All mine are in normal planters/pots/hanging baskets as it keeps them off the soil and (slightly more) out of harms way.0 -

You've stated yourself that yours are in normal planters/containers. Presumabley you had to buy those? Where's the difference with the OP's suggestion? Consider that the same three pack stacking planter I've seen online and on eBay for £15 or so, £2.97 for the same thing in the 99p shop and you have a bargain. Unhelpful putdowns like yours aren't really within the spirit of MSE. Just because someone wants to use something you feel is unecassary, doesn't warrant a reply like yours.
Thanks for the suggestion OP.0 -
They are an attractive way to grow strabs if you don't have the space anywhere else....0

Well im not sure why someone has said they arent needed. I like to thik ive become quite experienced and ive made a huge one (well about 4 foot) out of a 5 foot plastic barrel.
Ive then drilled out holes all along it and it has maybe 50 holes - either now with a straweberry growing through the whole plus some in the top.
I didnt like the look as they sprawl across the open ground and it also keeps them off the ground and is far less unsightly.
In essence - im a fan of them and experienced or inexperienced they serve a usefull purpose.0 -

I'd imagine the fact that the fruit can't touch the ground help prevent them being eaten by slugs or rotting?0 -

Thank you for all the input!
We don't have enough garden space to grow strawbs in the volumes I'd like.
Plus the ground is currently pure clay except for the soil in my four small raised veg beds.
A very good point about slugs... from the moment I bought them I have been thinking about ways to 'moat' the planter stack. I grow toms in my hanging baskets and I'm also trying to cut down on the number of miscellaneous pots I have as it gets too untidy and cluttered and that affects my mind and I seem to literally lose sight of the plot and dither around and don't get much done. I need clarity!
I originally bought a terracotta planter because I thought that would be pleasing to the eye and more in keeping with my vague ambitions to having 'potager' style attempt at veg gardening.
Everything's up in the air anyway as the garden is supposed to be redesigned at some point in the near future and I think my doubts about the 'value' probably relates to my impulsive buying of items... and them never leaving the shed!
I bought six planters and they might still end up on ebay!:A0 -
Just to clarify, my post was refering to the Terracota death trap things. And a general one that you don't need anything special for strawberries. No offence intended.0
