It is up to employers how often they have checks carried out, and they are only as good as the day they are issued therefore it is recommended they are carried out regularly. However lots of employers don't bother renewing them regularly. For some HR depts it is a massive job if there are hundreds of employees needing them. They would need a few full time people to cope with what's involved!

It does sound strange that your friend is suddenly being barred from meetings etc. If they want her to get an up to date one but she already has one for the same role, most employers would set a timescale and the old one would do her until the new one came through. Are there other people in the same kind of work that she can check with and see if she has been singled out?

From my friends point of view, the LA are clutching at straws to try and make life as difficult as possible for this mum and her child, in the report she wrote everything was apparently positive and apparently contradicted everything that SS are trying to say about the family.

Understandably she is quite upset by this she had built up a good relationship with the little girl and her family on a friend basis as well as one in a professional capacity. She didnt think she was doing anything wrong :(

From what you have said, do you think it's possible that the local authority feel your friend's assessment is not objective? It is never a good idea for someone who is acting in a professional capacity to view their clients as friends. If she has become in some way attached to the family, perhaps she isn't able to objectively judge the situation?

However that wont be needed soon with the roll out of http://www.isa-gov.org.uk/
CRBs will still be required. Registration with the ISA will be an essential and one-off check prior to starting work with children or vulnerable adults, but if a CRB is needed now, it will still be needed then.

Hope your friend is sorted OP - if LA say so, it needs to be done.

I went to an ISA conference last week run by the home office. One of the scary stats is that 10% of teachers have NEVER had a CRB check. They've been in the same school, same post for years. Their employment contracts were issued prior to CRB set up.

Unsurprisingly, these are the people who will first be targetted in ISA roll out.

    Hi

My DH has to get his CRB renewed every three years at the same time as his Security ID Pass - he works in the restricted areas of an airport.

Also when you work at an airport you only have 10 weeks between the CRB being issued and getting the application completed before you have to apply for a new one.

:rotfl: I love that typo! Mind you, I'm not sure that a self-declaration would be worth the paper it was written on if anything went wrong, but there you go ...

    .

Savvy Sue reading that back yep, i love it too, you would not believe how tired I was when I answered, 3 full days of forest school!
We recommend they ask their staff to do a self declaration once a year at their annual reviews so that they are are to demonstrate that they have systems in place to review staffs suitability between CRB checks, you and I both know that it probably isn't worth the paper it is written on but the same can be said for the a CRB the day after it is issued. The thing the self declaration does acheive is evidence that anyone who did not declare a new conviction KNEW that they were supposed to do so.

Which make it easier to discipline them. A bit like doctor's not declaring risk of Hep C when they have been advised to go to Occ health for testing.

I am a volunteer breastfeeding supporter and we have our CRB's re-done every 3 years. I believe it's the full one we have done.

That's true, I suppose. It does jog the memory, apart from anything else. Not quite the same seriousness, but we have a van at work with quite a few different drivers, many of them volunteers. We are SUPPOSED to tell the insurance company every time one of them has an accident or makes a claim on their own insurance, but of course it never crosses their mind to do so. Therefore once a year we give them a form to fill in which we send off to the insurance company if it's not 'clean'.

Although I would hope that all our staff and volunteers would know they HAVE to tell their manager if anything goes at all wrong in their lives which might appear on a CRB if one were done tomorrow!
