CRB Checks

Does anyone know how often you should get a CRB check done if you stay in the same job?

From what i have read online there isnt an expiry date for them as anything could happen from it being printed, which obviously it wouldnt show.

However as far as i was aware that unless you applied for a new job that required one then this would be the only time it would be done?

Does anyone know of anything more specific?

  • My understanding is it is just the once if you are in the same job.

The idea being that it would be impossible for you to go unnoticed in the workplace if you are convicted while in their employment.

I'm not sure how it goes, whether the police contact the employer, or what, but that I think is what is supposed to happen.

It is not an ideal system in the slightest, but better than nothing!

People I know who work with children have to have it done every two years in their existing jobs.

Your employment contract should specify it. It will probably also specify that you have to tell your employers immediately regarding convictions etc, ie if you did something after your check had been done, you can't wait until the next check before they should know about it.

That's exactly how the ones up here (Disclosure Scotland) work. I've seen people checked under the old system and haven't been rechecked in 10+ years. I've also only ever had them when I've changed jobs too.
  • Having worked for a local authority I haven't heard of any rechecking!

Currently working at an LA all our staff have had to renew their CRB's. Exercise just finished.

OH works with vulnerable adults and is supposed to get rechecked every 2 years, but it often slips to 3 years. I worked with kids and was supposed to get rechecked every 3 years, but never did. Some local authorities ask teachers to have them redone every few years.

AFAIK there is no legal requirement for it, it's down to the company/agency involved.

It isn't mandatory to renew, some firms will, every 3/4 years usually, as their own in house practice.
  • I worked for the LA for over 10 years and was checked upon employment and was checked again 7yrs later. When my contract ended (starting a family) and I was re-offered another contract, I was crb checked again. I think (without checking) my old crb was still valid but had to be re-done because my job description had changed. Crazy and what a waste of money.

That is correct, if you change job roles, or get promoted you will have to be re checked.

From my past experience working in HR for the NHS, there is no legal requirement to renew CRB's if you don't change jobs, they do not expire, and as someone mentioned above, employment contracts usually require you to declare if you get into any "bother" with the boys in blue.

From memory, it is recommended by CIPD that employers carry out their own risk assessment to decide at what frequency they want their employees CRB's to be renewed and it can vary depending on what your job is, even within the same organisation. For example, Junior Doctors were usually 3 yearly, whilst nurses tend to be yearly or 2 yearly, (at least that was the case in our NHS trust). It is entirely at the employers discretion and also up to them to organise the checks, rather than the employee.
