Morning. I have just bought 3 garlic heads from my local nursery. The instructions tell me to plant each head whole. I understood that I should split into cloves before planting. That makes me confused!
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks

go with your instincts, break it up and plant them individually. I've never heard of that before.0

what is the variety?0

Hi there - I bought a pack of three heads from garden centre too and I split them and planted individually weekend before last and was very excited this morning to see that three have sprouted up above the ground!! On a slightly different note I planted some in a window box type container and then others in empty slimfast milkshake tubs (1 clove per tub) that I put holes in the bottom of - it was the ones in the slimfast tubs that had grown which made to happy to think I've just lost my first stone and the tubs went to good use too!! I've never heard of planting whole heads of garlic either. I've grown garlic for years and have always planted individual cloves.0

I think this must be a mistake. if you planted a whole head of garlic, each clove would sprout, but wouldn't have sufficient space to grow into new heads, so all that I would think you'd end up with would be the soggy old head of garlic you originally planted with loads of sprouts coming out of it? I'd always break it up into cloves.2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.

Many thanks everyone. In response to MORTAL the variety is FOKHAGYMA. However, the overriding view seems to be that cloves are planted individually which does seem logical. Thanks again - here's hoping for lots of garlic later in the year.0

Hi
I had planted 3 garlic cloves in a square 3inch pot & left them outside.
I have noticed today 2 out of the 3 so far have sprouted & i can see the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot so obviously they need potting on.
What Size pot would be best for them to next to go in to, would they be ok to be all kept together & planted in to there final Morissons bucket (9/10 inches) they need to be kept in containers as i have no garden.
Thanks0 -
I split 3 up, and the indvidual cloves are coming up a treat.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100/100miles
