ClamAV is a scanner, certainly not on-access, for info - http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/

Pass - most a/v software for Linux appears to be primarily targeted at safeguarding Windows partitions in dual boot configurations.

I have just installed Linux Mint onto my Laptop and thought I bet get some free Anti-Virus on it.

Why do you think this is necessary? What purpose would it serve?
So what i was wanting to know is if it comes with the AVG already installed?
    It's highly unlikely.

As far as Clam AntiVirus is concerned it
. . . . . . . is an open source (GPL) anti-virus toolkit for UNIX, designed especially for e-mail scanning on mail gateways.
The mails may be going to Windows machines and we wouldn't want to frighten their users, would we? Clam is not intended to protect a Linux machine.

You really don't need an antivirus on a linux system, as long as you are keeping it up to date via Mint's software updater. As Baldur points out, the antivirus software programs for linux are really to scan windows partitions or to scan email being sent via the computer if it is used as a relay

    Thanks for all the replies.

On a side note, since i logged into the pidgin messenger on it, iv not received a single email to my hotmail account in 5 hours and i normally get about 25 an hour. Could this cause that to happen?
