in Water bills
Just had a water meter fitted and as we have the old style toilets I want to change them for more efficient models. I have tried to find info on these toilerts but can anyone recommend an inexpensive/efficient model. I know that Aldi were selling some a while ago, but were they any good.I cant just put "Hippos" in the old cisterns because they ar just too old and really need replacing.Any suggestions please.

Last time I lived in a place with a "water saving toilet" it was rubbish. It trickled so little water into the pan per flush, it wouldn't clear away anything but "number ones" and a single sheet of toilet paper. Two sheets or more down the pan at once and it would float there for 3, 4, 5 flushes and counting.
Stick to the old fashioned bogs. One flush does the trick.0 -

I agree, we have replaced out old ensuite and have a dual flush thing, bloody waste of time, do a big job and you spend ages trying to flush the flippen thing!! I have even resorted to mashing it up a bit in a feeble attempt to get rid. Toilet paper just seems to spin round and go nowhere, and it's an Armitage Shanks one too, so not a cheapy bog.
Our old toilet in the main bathroom flushes first time every time no matter how big you dump....;) and I assume in the end uses less water
So now dump only in main bathroom, ensuite wee only....
So yes firmly agree don't bother with a water saving one, we wont again.

why cant you use hippos, ask your water company nicely and thye may even give you them free, alternatively use a house brick or a bag full of peblesneed to have a lightbulb moment0

I've got a modern dual flush toilet and I've had absolutely no problems. So obviously the design of the toilet you guys went for is cr*p. Mine is a Laufen from a specialised bathroom shop. (I had to check the make as the parts of my bathroom suite are all made by different suppliers.)
However I agree that if you have an old toilet putting a brick or hippo in it will be cheaper than changing it. It does work and there is no point changing a toilet unless it's knackered.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
Thanks for all the input,Folks.I wondered if that was the general concensus.I'd read that the Yanks are removing their water saving bogs and reinstalling the old ones! Trouble is, the one I've got is pretty knackered and recently the lever(inside) broke so I had to make a new one - and its a syphon one not washdown.0

Old loos are designed to flush with more water, the test to comply with standards is v basic, so a reduction in the water quantity will make the w.c. work much less efficiently.
Many low water flush W.C. manufacturers have just reduced the level of water and not really re-engineered the pans for 3-6ltr or 4-2.6ltr flush.
As previous poster said their laufen WC great. Unfortunately even many known brands outsource, twyfords just announced end ok UK manufacturing.
but there are many well designed great w.c's out there that will perform great and save lots of water and flush properly. The age old adage still applies, you gets what you pays for.0
