Most of that only applies to business's
I'm afraid the OP won't have much comeback
Sorry just read your other bit too cyberbob. A car has to be satisfactory quality if purchased from a dealer, but if purchased privately then everything stated in the ad has to be true, referencing the head gasket etc. So the OP does have rights here, sorry cyber.0 -

Thanks no need to apologise. It would be incredibly difficult to enforce though. You could attempt small claims but even if you won that doesn't garantee a refund.0 -

Very true! A court can rule in your favour, but as you say, nothing says you'll actually get the money. Then they can go totally the other way to common sense, I always think of the caravan thread when something like this comes up.
Hope you're sorted soon OP - keep us updated!0 -

if you removed the head and replaced the head gasket it has been replaced
if you do the job correctly by replacing the head bolts, skimming the head etc the head gasket is replaced
both mean the ad can say the HG is replaced, only one will result in the engine working for any length of time0 -
this a copy of his ad
Recent work includes:-
New front brakes
Also head gasket was suspected of being on its way out, so this has been replaced and had the head skimmed etc. Also new timing belt oil and filter etc.
Things to mention:-
Theres a scrape on the rear drivers side wheel arch
Drivers door lock is a bit loose
Marks on windscreen may require polishing or replacement, National windscreens in Manchester quoted £100+VAT to replace
Any questions please feel free to call
With the above mentioned faults I have now reduced the price to £800

This short MOT alone would have made me very suspicious.
Having said that you will have to prove the head gasket wasn't done and the way he says it I would honestly think it was done or he genuinely thinks it was done.
I had an ex girlfriend who had her car serviced for years by the same guy and it became obvious he was not doing all the work he claimed he had done.
There is something funny here OP and I'm not sure you should be throwing good money at this car at the moment.0
