also in the UK it's called "theft" ;)

Just take it, if anyone objects give it back.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I have had things from skips. I work on the theory that if the skip in on the street/road ok to take.

If it is in someones garden then you should ask.

But as it is in a skip the thought is it is being thrown anyway.

to be argumentative (unlike me! ;) ) how do you know where the stuff is going?

they may be taking it to a reclamation yard to sell on.

doubtful, but you just never know.

that's why you either have to just nick it or you ask them.

to be honest if it were me, i'd look through the windows just in case there were any old doors or what not i may be interested in, if there wasn't then just take take take! lol

but if there is, then as mentioned ask them if there's any other bits they're chucking out.

Always smile sweetly, ask nicely and they'll probably deliver! - No kidding.

A friend of mine did this and found he not only got what he asked for but more besides. Once the builders knew what he was doing and likely to need "the lad" used to put it in his front garden for him to check. Friend also reckoned that once the builders knew someone would be able to use the stuff it was removed with more care. Didn't cost him anything to ask, just a case of beer as a general thank you at the end.

I just got an amazing office chair from a skip and i'm over the moon. There is no way I would have been able to afford one and been looking one for ages - skint student doing my dissertation and been in pain from sitting on a dining room chair for so long.

I am disgusted that people waste so much stuff, a few weeks ago I got a fantastic vaccuum cleaner from the bin outside my partner's house. It worked straight away no need to even change the fuse.

Think about it how much this country has changed, back in the wartimes people were very 'waste not want not' and every little thing counted... now people just throw away willy-nilly. I think if you can make use of someone else's rubbish, go for it.

Well I waited till just before I went to bed and went and got 3 lengths from the skip.

There's a few more shorter lengths in there now, and the panel door that was in there had also gone when I walked past the next morning, so I wasn't the only one with an eye on the stuff being thrown out.

Just saved myself £15 and it's the right size.

A quick sand down and it's ready.
  • I seem to remember seeing this mentioned on a radio programme a couple of years ago and the guest lawyer's opinion was that by being thrown into a skip an item was deemed to have no value to the owner as it was now rubbish.
Therefore you can't steal an item that has no value...
    So not classed as theft.

It's common sense really. Who would put anything of significant value in a skip in the street, leave it for several days completely unsecured, and expect it to stay there ?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
