Take what you need, stick a note through the relevant door saying "Took some pieces of skirting board from your skip - hope that's OK - if you want it back please leave a note in no X" where X is your house number. That way you get around the problem of not being in when they are working but also provide a solution to the "theft" problem.

However as stated, its in the skip because they don't want it, and you are most likely to be saving them money on landfill charges so its unlikely to be a problem.

Personally I think that's doing things back to front and is a bit cheeky.

Taking first then communicating about it is a bit off imo. But we're all different and I'm sure many wouldn't care, it's all just opinion. :)

Anyway I think everyone agrees that there's unlikely to be any problem and most people would be happy someone else could get some use out of what they don't need.

Let us know if you got it OP.

  • I'd knock and ask them. When we had a skip, I wouldn't have minded people taking things out as it would free up some space for us to fit more! What annoyed me is when people put their rubbish into it!!

You could write them a note first and wait for a reply and in the meantime someone from the next street will have been along over night and taken them.

Whatever you decide to do, get them back in the dry asap.

It's called skip diving (dumpster diving in the states) and is both MSE and green.

Go for it before it disappears

I think it's only fair that you take what you want out of their skip.

And if there is anything you were wanting to get rid of you could dump it in the skip as a replacement. Swopsies and all that.

I would take what you need, I would also leave a note asking if they have anything else coming out of the house and offer them a drink for the trouble of saving it for you.

Take what you want and leave a note. If you leave it too long, or wait for permission it will be long gone.
