Hi,
I wonder if anyone can advise me on internet security. At the moment I am using "Windows Live One Care". In a couple of weeks, my subscription is up for renewal, but Windows Live One Care is not taking any new business or allowing renewals! The One Care website has a link to "Microsoft Security Essentials". What I'm trying to find out is if anyone has any experience of this system? It's free which is great, but will it give all of the necessary protection? Any thoughts on this matter will be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer. ktj.

Yes, It's actually alot better than OneCare in protection. One of the best free ones available.0 -
Does this help?Put simply, MSE is OneCare minus the stuff that's not related to fighting malware. It doesn't have a managed firewall, can't manage a "circle" of computers on a home network, doesn't help prevent applications from putting icons in the system tray at boot-up, and doesn't have any online photo backup capabilities.0

but what MSE lacks in spyware detection Defender makes up for?0

MSE will disable Windows Defender, as it provides protection against malware, not limited to spyware and adware0 -

Hi,
Thanks everyone for your input. Much appreciated. From what has been said it seems like MSE on its own is not enough, so I'm still not sure what I should be installing to ensure complete protection.
As a "3rd. ager":eek::eek:, I am well aware of my lack of proper understanding of the internet and of much of modern technology and I would not have the confidence to know what to put together without further advice, so I'd be very grateful for any further suggestions. All I'm after is something that will give me complete peace of mind, even if I have to pay for it (as long as it's not too expensive). I really hope that someone out there can help many thanks in advance to anyone who can. ktj.0 -

Now, which version of Windows have you got?0 -
Microsoft Security Essentials & Windows Firewall are more than adequate to protect your computer, anything above and beyond this is pretty much an illusion propagated by the paid for security software vendors in order to retain customers with FUD. You don't need software that completely takes over your computer, you're better off with a few simple programs.0

Im not entirely sure thats true
I dont know of ANY free programs that deal with malware very well
That said, I dont know of any decent programs at all that deal with malware save malwarebytes and SAS to a degree:idea:0 -
I like Onecare as it has the MyCircle central backup which automatically backs up my computers to a central external hard disk in addition to the virus protection. MSE doesn't do this. And despite what everyone says about Onecare, I've never had a virus since starting using it three years ago.
My last Onecare subscription expired mid-2009 but they have given me two automatic 6month extensions free since then. I know if I want to move to Windows 7 Onecare isn't supported but at the moment I am quite happy using Vista & XP on my computers.0
