Virgin.net cancellation charge

Hi

I'm thinking of going with them so I'm not tied to a contract.

But their T&C says

"While we don´t tie you into a 12 month contact (unlike most broadband providers), we do reserve the right to apply a £50 cancellation charge if your service is cancelled within 12 months of activation. Unfortunately, this charge is necessary due to the cost of activating your broadband service."

However I've read on this board that some people were not charged this fee.

Can anyone who has cancelled with Virgin clarify this? were you charged £50 on cancelletion?
