Barclays Bank, smacked my hand

Hi all

Today in the mail, receive a letter from Barclay's that I am not allowed to use internet/telephone banking
Rang them, their answer was you are bankrupt, therefore you can't use our facility it's policy. But you can use the bank, and if you want get weekly statements.

Where is the logic in that? by using internet banking I could manage our accounts.
Now we have to go to the local bank or ATM, to view the account. This does not help me with my medical condition.

Is this not being prejudice against good creditors and bad ones?????:(

Hmm, we never received letters or anything from Barclays. They signed me up for internet banking without asking. They told hubby he couldn't use it until discharge, but we tried to sign him up anyway and were successfull, never heard anything of it.

We're both discharged now though thankfully.

I'm sure I've read that sone BR folks on here are with Barclays and have online banking too. It does seem that some people lose online access and some don't. If I were you I would go back and ask to speak to someone more senior. It just seems ridiculous IMHO. You are more likely to manage your account better with access to both these services and you are actually costing them more as a customer if you have to go into the bank.

Well just been looking on the Barclays site and nothing on there suggests that Online banking is limited to certain customers. Also, I spoke to someone via the website's online help chat and they said they weren't aware of anything that stipulated that someone who was BR couldn't have access to online banking, but suggested speaking to my local branch. If it was me, I would certainly try and take it further. Maybe go into your branch and as to speak to a manager and if they say it is indeed policy, then as to see details of this. If its policy, it will be written down somewhere.

Mikey Burnsey, I personally think it's a petty, punative sanction on Barclays behalf to deny an undischarged bankrupt access to online banking services. If any random customer was really so bad, surely Barclays would decline to do business with them. Nationwide are due to upgrade their basic bank account later this year and they offer a decent online banking service to undischarged bankrupts. Co-Op offer an excellent Cashminder a/c with debit card and online banking for undischarged bankrupts. Why not give Barclays the sack and switch to another bank who are a little more in touch :)
  • This is the letter I sent to Barclay's, after speaking to their team at their legal department,I pointed out they still have not given a reason.

Today I received a letter from your legal notice team, explaining that they had received a letter confirming that we our bankrupt, it stated that we could carry on using the banking facility, but not internet/telephone banking service.
I the rang their office where I spoke to xxxx xxxxx, asking on why we had been banned from using Internet banking, I got quite annoyed with his manner, he seem to make me feel that we should be grateful that Barclays allowed us to bank with them, pointing out that other well known banks would not. He did not give me a sensible answer; in fact he made me feel that we our not trustworthy in managing our account, and we would open other accounts, if we were allowed to use the facility.
I suffer from chronic pain (and had an spinal operation in July last year). And rely on the service, as I cannot walk more than 100mts, on some days in fact it is hard to get out of the bed.
Please can you use your discretion and allow us to keep using the banking service or give me some sensible reason why we are restricted from Barclay’s services and not the one I was given about not being honest enough to use banking service and we are a risk to the bank.

I can support any medical claims I have made and supply any documents needed.

Mikey, please let us know the outcome. I know some people argue that folks should vote with their feet and just go elsewhere, but personally I think its better to try and challenge them on this and of course doing so might possibly help others in a similar situation down the line.
  • Got a meeting today @ 12pm with manager, this should be interesting, I am sure that their is no mention of with-drawing the facility in the welcome pack, going dig out later!!!!

Cool, lets us know. I've search on their website and can't find anything that suggests online (or even telephone) banking is only available to certain customers. If this does indeed prove to be the case, then its should definately be included in the small print on the site or somewhere.

Don`t forget Barclays and the Coop are the only 2 really BR friendly banks out there!
