Are there any energy companies not using G4S, (unfortunately one just knocked and was horrid) I don't want anything to do with that company and do not want them in my home at all, I have no problem with regular meter readers just avoid G4S after researching them. I would change suppliers rather than deal with them.

They say they need to inspect the meter for safety. I've never seen a meter reader do that. They just look at the numbers and are away.

I let G4S in to read my leccy meter this week. Never usually do but I was caught off guard thinking it was my parcel delivery. Least it's been nearly 3 years since they read it so they won't be reading it again anytime soon. I submit my own readings for billing.
  • I am registered with British Gas for both electric & gas and I have been having problems with their meter readers G4S. From September we started to submit our meter readings online, armed not only with the law that Gas meters have to read by a meter reader at least 1 every 2 years, this made things easier not only for us but for my son who has severe autism and gets very stressed when strangers enter the house, even for a few minutes, the stress has often caused him to have seizures. Well everything was fine, when readers called I would just say sent it in online and they would say ok and wander off. Then December came and a G4S reader knocked at my door, I explained we had sent our our readings in, he said he had to take them, I said no you don't by law only once every 2 years, I told him about how it would effect my son as well. He went away I went out a few minutes later & the reader came back & tried to get my wife to let him in, she refused. He then came back a third time on the same day, this time I took his name and reported him to BG, who told me to report him G4S, BG said they could not stop readers coming round despite my son's disability, just refuse to let them in. G4S said the guy should not of come back and could see there was no need in him coming has my meter had been read. No more readers until today, when I told him sorry you can't come my meter has been read and quoted the law, he said it had to be read twice in one year by law now because of health & safety. I explained I would check this out and also that our local authority does as annual check on our gas supplies & mains. I am now writing to BG and I have had it confirmed that it is still once every 2 years and that is for the gas meter only, there is no law when it comes to electric meter. Seems the readers are getting pushy & ruder & are trying anything to get in so they can get their commission. Rant over

G4S have no right of entry.

If you continue to refuse entry your supplier is legally obliged to send to the property in question a "Human Rights Letter" as required under the Rights of Entry Act 1954 Section 2. You will be given (normally 14 days but must be a minimum of 7 days) notice of the Warrant Action and will detail which Court the application will be made and at what time. You will have the right to object infront of the Magistrates.

2 times per year is Bull, quoting health and safety is Bull. You can report them to HSE on line for misquoting H&S regulations.

This so called "safety check" is to verify that you have not interfered with the meters to get free gas and electricity.

  • British Gas don't have a problem, in fact they have instructed me not to let them in. G4S have even agreed my meter does not need to be read yet as I am still within the 2 year period.

G4S meter readers are pushy because the more meters they read the more commission they make. They will make up any old bull just to get into your home to read it.

If they had it their way they would be traipsing in every 3 months.
