G4S AccuRead Ltd

Yesterday, I had a visit from a rather rude meter reader. "Come to read yer gas and leccy meters". It was not convenient and I refused entry. He then leant on my door buzzer and was quite insistent that I let him in, "you hae tae let me in". "No I don't, go away"

Then he posted a letter through my door>
We need to inspect your gas meter....For your safety, this inspection is a legal requirement ........ I will call again on MON EVENING
I do not think it is right that this company should be using such tactics to gain entry to read a meter under the guise of an inspection.

I don't like being intimidated in my home and feel like winding him up in return. I am tempted to ask for his name and gas safe certificate number when he calls.

Am I being childish, he is only doing his job? What would you do?

  • it takes less than a minute to read the meters, i would of let him read it, then away, least then you get proper reading and not a estimate. 1 minute out of 1440 . he is doing his job do you expect a set time date ect , ? he has to read about 100 a day , if everyone was like you no meters would get read except maybe mine.

I am quite capable of reading my own meter.

Good grief, what world do you live in?

Very childish indeed, why not just let him in. They have to check your meters to not only get the read, but to make sure they are safe and dont need any further attention. And obviously the fact that they check that you are not "by-passing" the meter in anyway.
It is purely safety - what did you think he was going to do, under the "guise" of the inspection?

    My advice: Grow up.

if it's not convenient, i wouldn't let him in either and i'd expect him to respect that. nothing childish about it.

"winding him up in return" is another matter. it hardly seems worth it, but if you feel he was genuinely rude and unprofessional, then complain to the company. why should you just put up with bad service, if that's what you feel you got?

I din't think your being childish. By the sounds of it its his rudeness that got your back up. I would complian to the company about the attitude of the man. I think by law you have to grant access if there is a safety issue.

I must admit I hate people turning up unnanounced. I have refused entry to meter readers before when it hasn't been convenient and they have all been fiine with rearranging it.

When the man returns let him read your meter but ask to see his ID so you have all details to complain to. They have to show you their ID.
  • yes lets get him sacked, and anyone we dont like the look off, wow what power we wield, in our little worlds, yes you where being childish , if i was the reader id misread your meter, so you get a very large bill and have the hassle of getting it corrected. phone calls ect ,

Don't be so childish and silly a complaint wont get him sacked unless he makes a habit of bad CS and has been in trouble before. There is no excuse for rudeness and no one should have to put up with it.

    Thanks Bob,

If it were my company, I would want to know if one of my staff was rude to customers.

I was not rude to him.

I would suggest if a customer says "sorry it is not convenient" an appropriate response might be "I will be back same time on Monday, is that OK?"

Leaning on my buzzer until I answered again, demanding entry is not acceptable ......... IMHO.
