USA Car hire, one way drop off fee?

I heard that you have to pay a fee locally if you wish to drop a rental car off at a different place that where you hired it?

Any rough ideas at how much this fee is?

Quite often theres no fee if its within state (or the neighbouring state). For example we picked up a car in SF, dropped it off at LA - no fee.

    Bloody expensive!
    Airline network costs
    Distance Applicable One Way Fee
    0 to 200 miles US$50.00 + local taxes
    201 to 500 miles US$100.00 + local taxes
    501 to 1000 miles US$300.00 + local taxes
    Over 1000 miles US$500.00 + local taxes

    Note:
There is no fee for one way rentals within the states of Florida and California, or for one way rentals between the states of California, Arizona and Nevada.

If you get a quote from the hertz web site it includes the fee in the charges, so you can try different options.

I'm renting in buffalo, and wanted to return to connecticut. Found it was much cheaper to drive just into NY state, return the car and take the train back.

Did 6 states two years ago and found it cheaper to hire two cars and fly between main locations than to hire one car for the duration once the one way fee was included.
