BT phone line & Broadband

Hey guys, I've used this site before but couldn't retrieve my user/pass so here i am, again.

Anyway, i'm moving to an area with no cable so i'm hoping to get Virgin Broadband (current provider) through a phone line. Here lies my confusion;

1. If the place has already got a BT phone line, do i need to register with BT or pay them a monthly price to activate this? Or do i just pay Virgin for the use of this as i'm guessing i'll need a Virgin phone line as well as the Broadband?

2. If there's no phone line there, at all, can Virgin install their own or again, do i need to get a BT only line & sign up & pay monthly? I don't mind paying an install charge, i just don't want to get into a contract with BT.

3. And lastly, do i need a Broadband phone contract if getting BB down the phone?

If you want Virgin phone and broadband and are not in a Virgin cable area you dont need to go to BT as Virgin can Install a line and broadband for you via Openreach. Looking at Virgins website they charge £35.00 activation fee for broadband and £44.00 for the line to be connected.

Brilliant, thank you. Do you HAVE to have a Virgin phone in this position? I understand i need the phone line but just wondering whether i'll have to be paying a monthly charge?

Won't let me do it online, it asks me to phone them to complete the transaction. Why is this?

Just to add. I've read that the Post Office also install phone lines for a low cost, but if i done this, wouldn't i be paying for Virgin BB, Virgin phone & a Post office phone? or can i have a ADSL connection without a virgin phone?

Yes, on Virgin National you have to pay line rental at £11.99.
Any ADSL connection will require you to pay line rental to someone.
Even if you were on VM cable you would still pay a 'broadband only' fee that is equivalent to paying line rental on top.

As Macman says, you'll always have to pay line rental in an ADSL area if you want broadband.

I wouldn't panic about having to have a phone line installed until you know for sure that you'll have to - it is expensive but it's also fairly rare. Maybe you could ask your new landlord/the estate agent if there's a working line at your new place?

If you do have to have a new line installed BT do a reduced cost installation when you take a broadband and phone package. They also do 'free' installation when you take broadband, phone and TV but it'll add £5 on top of your monthly bill.

I'm fairly sure Post Office line installation is £110 - maybe the offer ran out?
