I think you will find that all companies will eventually charge the IGT premium

I disagree with your speculation and here are 2 reasons.

    1) The southern and scottish group have just DROPPED the charges which doesn't go along with your forecast trend.

    2) Ebico are a non profit aking company governed by christian principles.
They charge everyone the same regardless of the costs to serve them unlike other profit making companies. I would suggest that what you are talking about does not fit in with their guiding principles.

Obviously we can agree to disagree (and I'm happy to do that) but what you are suggesting is just your own opinion and doesn't seem to have a great deal of basis for it in the last post.
My post is similarly my opinion but I have posted some background to back up the reasons for my beliefs.

Don't listen to anyone saying 'switch supplier now!'

Oh MSE Martin, make up your mind - switch last week, don't switch this week. What's next week's advice? Which way is the wind blowing? Is this a game of "Simon says"?!

Seriously though, can anyone explain to me if constant switching is a waste of this planet's resources, through all the time, paper work and money spent switching?

I understand the question and your note. The problem is there is no way to know when a price rise will come, all you can do is spot trends.

It had seemed before BG that there were some smaller catch up rises in the market, but when BG increased its prices it became a full on rise session - hence the switch of 'status'.

I do always say these are my best guess and estimates - no one can fully ride the markets as these rises are totally secret before hand.

I hope by doing it this way - it sways the averages so you've a better chance of doing well by switching at the right time. However I freely admit there are no guarantees - that's the best I can offer I'm afraid - there is no right answer.

I do my best to track the market, speak to the right people, and make the call - but I can say right now it will never be 100% right. I just hope that it will be nearer helping people save money than by doing it at pure random chance

  • HI guys,

Reading the posts on here. I work for a power company in their customer service department. I think we should all cancel our direct debits and not pay our quarterly bills. The power companies would feel the pinch then when they do not have millions to pay directors and share holders. Saying that though they would probably lay me off. Oh well.... :-(

I totally agree with the comments on here. It is time for change. The Government needs to stop building domes and going to war and focus on our own issues at home. If they dont people will end up freezing to death.

When i do find out, should I stay with them for the time being or do you think it is worth shopping around seeing as it takes 14 days to transfer?

You've got a bit of a dilemma - as you have no comparative data, for the new place, to feed into a comparison site?

Had the same problem when I moved 18 months ago - from a place with no gas, to one with gas ch. and it's difficult to make it up - until you've been there virtually a year, as seasonal use is obviously very varied.

Best to ask the vendor, nicely, if they will tot up the last year's bills? May not work out the way you use the place - but it's at least a foundation for a calculation?

My vendor was deceased ..... so communication was a bit inappropriate!

Someone muted this before but sorry, I can't understand why you should not switch to the best capped rate now, as this is very likely to be less than the next price rise on standard accounts.

Or am I missing the point?
I think that makes perfect sense. However, it is likely that these price rises will result in suppliers 'raising the goalposts' when it comes to capped prices. If you can get signed up to a current deal then that's great, but new customers should be very careful they are not signed up to a new, more expensive, set of rates.

I'm currently with powergen dual fuel and I must add that I stay in the midlands where they are the producers hence the most expensive.
But my bills for the quarter 15 dec - 15 march went up two times the year before. To add to the pain three months after that 15 mar - 15 June ( summer months and the price rise on 10 mar 06) my bill was 80% of the winter months.
Looking forward with a baby on the way in december and my wife being home there will be more electricity and gas needed.

    Now why you/I should switch.
Note: These prices are for midlands please check for your area.
Also this is based on my current dual fuel and paid quaterly when the bill arrives.
All prices include VAT ( what you have to pay ) and are pence per KWH

Current powergen prices ( as per my latest bill )
Remember this is before the rise which you can expect from Powergen following the trend of British gas and EDF.

Gas 3.53205p for 1st 1177 kwh per quarter
2.80825p for subsequent KWH ( Expect to go into this band even for even for small users)

    Electicity 7:
Day 19.317 for 1st 232 units per quarter
10.939 for rest ( Expect to go into this band even for small users)

    Night 4.194p

Current EDF price as from there website.
    http://www.edfenergy.com/edf-energy/showPage.do?name=homeenergy.switchBrand.prices.til&menuName=ourPrices

    ALL REGIONS
First 5860 kWh per annum* Each additional kWh
    Dual Fuel GAS 4.127p 2.596p

First 1000 daytime All other Night
kWh per quarter * daytime kWh
    EAST MIDLANDS 19.01p 9.11p 3.93p

I did check my annual day time consumption for the past year and I would have paid all 19.01p and never got the reduced rates.

*Banded kWh Price will be applied on a pro rata basis on each day covered by the relevant bill and rounded to the nearest whole kWh. E.g. for a bill covering 90 days the first 1445 day kWh's will be charged at the first banded day kWh rate, (ie 90/365 * 5860)

Now for the fun part and why I disagree with Martin.
    My new price offered:
    Gas 1.94p /KWH
    Day Night
    East Midlands 8.76 2.69

    Now why change:
    1) I'm currently paying more for my electricity from powergen even after the EDF rises.
    2) I expect the new prices quoted to me to go up. But even if they go up by 100 % ( double ) I would still save money.
    3) Approx savings £250 minimum anyways.

    My Tips:
    1) Will you be better of or not is a very personal decision.
    2) Check this website for which websites you can use for switching.
    3) Also note that you could save money by having gas from one supplier and power form another rather than having both from one supplier. The discount they might give you with dual fuel may not be big enough.
    4) As these comparision websites make money as an introducer for you to the supplier. Some website don't show the best deal for you, if they do not have introducing agreement with the supplier.

    Best of luck.

My capped price with Scottish Power for the last 3 years has just come to an end and I have been presented with a new tariff which is double the amount! Should I change now as I think I could get cheaper or wait as suggested.

Surely capped prices lock you in, stops you shopping around.
And if the energy providers do their sums right they will still make a profit on you. They have a whole department analyzing things on a daily basis, probably forward buying too.

thanks for getting back.first time using anything like this site. Fixed pricing worked for me as I use little gas and electricity, currently paying £20.00 month direct debit for gas and electric! Surely with huge price increases of way makes sense to maybe pay more for few months but cheaper in long run.
