Hi.
A friend at work has a broken emachine and has asked me to fix it.

She was using it as normal but then it wouldnt turn off when she pressed the power button. In the end she had to switch it off at the mains. Now, when we try to turn it on again at the power button it doesnt turn on.

I have changed the power lead just to be sure it isnt that.
Im assuming that it must be the power button itself if it wasnt working even when the PC was on? But getting to the power button is difficult because you cant remove the front as far as I can tell?
I think I may have found the wire that goes from the power button to the motherboard tho (not sure because the power button is hidden from an internal view). It has 2 ports on the motherboard, (1 is split into a green and a white cable, and the other is split into 4, a red and white cable and a black and white cable).

Can anybody please advise how I can diagnose and fix the problem.

Cheers

Rob

    Hi.
I realised those cables went to something on the motherboard that was labelled. For example 1 said power led.

    Th emachine is quite old I believe. Its only 40gb, 128mb ram, a 2.5 celeron> Its called a 220.

    Any help is appreciated :)

The button clicks ok, it just doesnt do anything :( So not too sure what I will do once I get the front off.

Im not sure, that is the problem.
The only thing making me think that it is the button is that she said it wouldnt switch off via the button, but had to be pulled at the mains. Therefore, it was working, but the button wasnt. Then when she replugged in, she couldnt get the button to turn on.

But you are right, she could be talking rubbish and it may well be the PSU :S

We also have an emachine 220 and about 2months ago the same thing happened to our pc.

We took it to a computer repair shop who told us our motherboard had gone. We had to get a new one costing around £90.

Any idea please as to how I can get info from her hard drive for her? Would I have to remove a hard drive from another PC and put hers in it? :(

    Hi all,

I had a very similar problem with my e machine about 5 months ago.

I took it to my local computer shop and they had a look at it and advised me that the processer had gone kaput and that it would be about £150.00 to repair.

Needless to say I collected it from them (in bits I hasten to add) and gave it to a mate of mine who plays with computers as a hobby.

He advised me that the motherboard had gone and it would cost about £60.00 to replace and rebuild my machine.

It's now in perfect working order

    HTH

    if you want to check if its the power switch, you can by pass it for test by;

find the power switch connector on the mother board this will be 3 pins wide

only the pins at either end are used eg. XOX

if you remove the connector and short the two pins on the motherboard as shown below momentarily with a paper clip or something the pc should start if the switch is as fault.
