Funny you should say that.... my heating is generally off 24/7 and the living room is always nice and warm with the spare heat my PC throws out :)

....plus I'm well insulated with other apartments above/below and on 2 of 4 sides :T

I have a plug in energy monitor and checked my P.C which has a 450 watt P.S.U
& it used about 19p over 8 hours. It was never in "sleep" or "standby mode" for any of the test. Hope this helps.

Which would indicate that it is running at about an average of 160-170W then.

    How many kWh?

What price do you use for a kWh?

Does that include monitor, printer, speakers?

I have a fairly powerful PC and the PC alone over 8 hours would use approx 1.2kWh which at 10p/kWh is 12p. A 21" LCD monitor adds another 240w(2.4p)

I would suggest you get yourself a plug in energy monitor and see for yourself what it actually uses.

Mine typically uses about 120W to 200W (but may peak slightly higher) - that excludes the speakers.

What did surprise me was that is consumes about 40W even when I thought it was off, not even in standby. That's equivilent to about 1 kWh per day (over £40 per year!) even if it's not used. Now it gets disconnected at the wall when not in use :)

Edit: to clarify, figures quoted are the sum of the base unit and monitor (but excludes speakers)

Computer is not off if its using 40w...

    Theys 2 standby modes..

Windows XP will use S1 standby mode.. this will turn off monitor and all fans in the computer and all the cards in side the pc.. But will still power CPU and ram..
Note: Editing reg setting can make Windows Xp us S3 standby mode.

This mode will use around 40-80w so better just to turn off the computer..

Vista, Windows 7 will use S3 standby mode..

This mode shuts every off but still powers the ram and usb.. this mode will use around 4-10w Only about 2-4w more then if the computer was off..
When computer is off it will use around 2-6w

NOTE: S3 standby mode must be set in bios before you can use it.
