Advice on the best basic account for my situation?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on which would be the best basic bank account for me to setup as i am in need for one.
I had a look at some suggestions and keep comeing back to Santander. What do you all reccomend?
*Notes -
I must be able to setup direct debits on the account.
Credit rating is not good.
I am already with RBS so they are out of the question.
Thanks very much in advance, Fraser.

Natwest is good as well as Barclays. If you don't like them, here are a list of more to choose from: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf0

Thank you both, i will have a look at that file and hopefully i will understand better.

Ok that chart was really helpfull
This is what I'm thinking...
[STRIKE]Santander[/STRIKE], Barclays or Natwest.
*Debtit card is important i guess so that rules out Santander.
*Barclays has lower charge for DD or SO (Not that I'm planning on being charged)
*Visa OR Solo?? Barclays is Visa, Natwest is Solo.
*Both banks are close by.
Between Barclays or Natwest? It's a hard choice, Don't want to end up with the wrong one.
Thanks, Fraser.0 -
Natwest offer Visa Debit now on there basic bank account.
Why are you looking to move away from RBS?Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

Oh great, i reckon il sway more towards Natwest now. I wil ltry get an account in the morning.
I need a new account because of the need for direct debit. Basically debt problems that mean i can't use my RBS account.
Thanks very much everyone. Fraser.0 -
Remember G8EKS that Natwest are part of the RBS group.
So if your having issues with your RBS account they may not allow you open a Natwest account.
To be on the safe side id make an application to barclays too.
I hope it all goes well for you :-)Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
Go for the Barclays account mentioned on the website that I posted. You get account details on the same day, and you only need one piece of ID to open. Everything will be in the post within 3-5 working days.
Natwest new debit cards can have problems at certain places, due to the retailers not recognising the cards, as their databases are no updated to reflect this change.0 -

hi
im with natwest and not had any probs using the new visa debit had it a few months now
although natwest is part of rbs they are under separate licences
so if you perfer natwest try them they can only say no and as its a basic bank account there is no credit check so id doesnt hurt to try0
