hi Tixy yep theft byfinding is an offence in England and Wales (scottish law is different -so can't comment) but you should have a defence if you can show that you took all 'reasonable' steps to locate the owner, so that couple may have got away with no punishment if they'd gone to the charity shop and left their address etc - right lesson for the day over (and please don't quote me cos im very often wrong but never intentionally )

I found a wallet in the street at New Year with a good couple of hundred pounds in it! I had great fun thinking about waht I could do with the money, but not before I had searched the wallet, found a phone number and left a message saying I had found something that was probably very valuable to him!

I've never met such a grateful man! I was glad to restore his faith in humanity!

I am however, still waiting on karma to wake up and come and give me a pat on the back

Niccatw, how lovely of you to phone the chap up and give the wallet back, many wouldn't, you will be rewarded sometime in the future for that lovely act of human kindness, they say what goes around comes around.
