How much extra has this winter cost you on heating?

I just got a jaw dropping gas bill in this morning and wondered if most people have used an awful lot more gas for heating than the same period last year.
My bill is quite good in that it has a little bar graph at the side showing my average daily gas consumption for the same quarter last year so I can compare easily.
Last year average daily was an average of 2.18 units a day and this year with the extended cold spell and all that snow we used almost double,av 3.86 units a day.
My gas bill for end of Dec to start of March this year is shocking,£319.20.
The electric bill arrived this morning too and the winter quarter is always quite high as we are at home more in the winter obviously.
Did most people get a shock with their winter heating bill?

Hi
My NPower dual fuel account is £135.50 in debit. It could have been worse as at the end of January, I switched from a standard to a online tariff. My electric consumption has stayed the same but the gas has more than doubled.
Hopefully I'll clear the debit in a couple of months.

Cost me an extra £100 altho other factors apart from the Big Freeze. Now back on course for £450 a year dual fuel. The electric blanket throw is useful.0

Sorry just to gloat im down 910 units for this quarter then the same period last year, tis amazing that just by making some small changes ( extra lagging etc) and using www.imeasure.org.uk cut our bills0

Our gas bill for nov to march 2010 was 362, for the same time last year it was £450 and we basically have had the boiler on 24/7 this year due to cold weather..... (it was an actual reading not estimated) i was expecting a bigger bill.... Our electric bill for nov to march 2010 was 115, for the same time last year it was 150.... dunno why they have come down, no body at home normally during the day..... weird....

p.s. all bills are actual readings not estimated readings..... always try and get actual readings sent in rather than BGs estimated readings....0 -
Our bill for both gas and electricity the last three months is £750, Thats having monitored our use carefully and kept heating to minimum. Thankfully now the weather is warming a bit I am hoping to drop the bills right down.0

I pay £27 a month on gas by DD. I got a bill last week (based on actual readings) and was £40 in credit......0

No idea, lovely British Gas managed to destroy all my records. So much for online account managing, I make sure I keep my own records now! However do have a record of the Feb - May quarter from last year so if you want to pop back in a couple of months and enquire about that one I'll be able to participate.0

Not much change tbh. We have become more energy efficient this year ompared to last and that seems to have off set the increase due to heating.0

Checked on our BG history - gas use is exactly the same, electricity is slightly up. We have still never paid £100 for a quarter of either.0

From end of October to end of Feb, 2008/09 was 5500kWh, 2009/10 was 4200kWh. The difference was an extra £100-worth of loft and pipe insulation this year - 1300kWh less heating in a much colder winter, so well worth the investment
Came out at £135 on my 'winter quarter' bill, and could have been 30% higher (although probably would have been even more allowing for the worse weather...), so it looks like the insulation will pay back in 2 or 3 years.A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone - Thoreau0
