can you downgrade iphone orange 3gs tariff after 9 months?

i read somewhere that 02 and orange allow downgrades on iphones, unlike vodafone, is this true?

i assume if you can you can only go down by one price plan?

As long you have served the first half of the contract length (however long it is) then you can drop a step down.....so from 35 to 30. I assumed most providers bar 3 and T-Mobile offered this?

    thanks.
i thought about a higher tariff with free phone, but the savings won't be huge for the hassle of it not happening.

    will stick to original plan

    having read this:

"You needn't stay on that tariff for the 18-month contract; O2 and Orange let you downgrade after 9."

so i decided to go for the higher tariff, with no cost iphone and plan to downgrade.
however on a 24 month contract, when can i downgrade, 9 months or 12 months?

Remember you can only downgrade an iphone tarrif to another iphone tarrif. You can also only move to a similar lenght tarrif (ie no moving from a 18 month tarrif to a lower priced 24 month tarrif.

But that said 02 seem to say 9 months, but you can only step down 1 tarrif a month so on a free iphone months 1-9 are £45 for the 16gb or £60 for the 32GB, month 10 £40/£45, Month 11 £35/40, months 12 £30/£35, month 12 £25/30 and then £25 a month for the rest of the contract.

    Total cost for 2 years is 16gb = £835, 32GB is £990.

Cheapest 24 month tarrif paying for the phone is 16gb £ 849 or 32GB £899 (224 x £25) plus phone cost. Is it worth the bother unless youneed the minutes for the first 9 months or so.

thanks gone for orange friends and family option
    16gb 3gs = £0
    on a 24 month x (£40x20% discount) £32 = £768
however if i can downgrade say at 12 month (but if earlier even better):
    12x £32 = £384
    12 x (£35x20% discount) £28 = £336
    total £720

but if i don't need the minutes and text and can step down further:
    12x £32 = £384
    1 x (£35x20% discount) £28 = £28
    11 x (£30x20% discount0 £24) = £264
    = £676!

can anyone confirm when i can downgrade on orange 24 month iphone tariff and if it's once, one step down a month etc.?

If its on 24 months, the downgrade is probably not possible at month 9 but more likely 15 (might be wrong).
And if you start downgrading, no doubt the 20% discount will disappear.
Why not ask Orange upfront of what you can or not cannot do.
