Arrrgh this sort of thing always drives me insane.
A lot of models and manufacturers do share panels, and some other components, but to say they're "just the same with a bigger price tag" is entirely wrong.
The most important thing in a television is its picture processing engine and they are unique to each manufacturer. If you don't know what one of those is, look it up.
Sharp are pretty awful these days, anyway. I have a Sharp rep come into work many weekends and he always looks miserable, because his TVs pale in comparison to pretty much everything else. Even LG and Toshiba look good next to his LED sets.0 -
I would also never refer to Samsung and a "Premium" Brand. My farts hospitalize small children0

To the OP: I would keep an accurate record of what failed and when, and use your rights under the SOGA to make sure that it has a "reasonablle lifetime".
My experience of a Sharp product (a monitor, not a TV) was very poor - it failed once within their warranty period, was replaced with one that was DOA, and the next replacement failed in less than a year. I contacted their customer services and told them that the product was only just over 2 years old - they made it clear that they didn't want to know. Which is why I am motivated enough to tell people what I think of Sharp customer service.
Good luck - I hope the repair lasts longer for you than mine did.0 -
I have the total opposite experience. I bought a Sharp LCD TV from John Lewis about 6 years ago, within 3 months I had a problem with the screen. JL arranged for their own engineers to come out and take it away for a repair, leaving me without any TV for 3 weeks. Another few months later and the PSU failed completely. This time I contacted Sharp direct, who came out within days, replaced the PSU and upgraded the main board, all onsite and had me up and running within a matter of hours, they even gave me an extra years extended warranty for my troubles and I've not had a single problem since.
And for the record, the major LCD panel manufacturers are Samsung, AUO, CMO, Sharp and LG Philips. Sony don't manufacture large LCD, they get most of their panels from AUO and they used to have a joint venture with Samsung but now they have set up with, yes, you guessed it...Sharp. That'll be something for you Sony fan boys to think about.0 -

Sounds a really good recommendation for Sharp.:)
My Brother used to buy Sharp, his microwave lasted eighteen months before going up in smoke, his first TV lasted two and a half years before the tube went, the second needed three repairs in two years and the picture was lousy, when it broke down again he finally gave up on Sharp.
He has now had both a Panasonic microwave and TV for over three years without any faults whatsoever.0 -

I have worked (in a very senior role), in two of the largest electronic manufacturers in the world, and panel wise its 100% fact. Electronic wise, it's not too far off either.dreamypuma wrote: »I would also never refer to Samsung and a "Premium" Brand.0 -
Which is what i said.

Which shows how little you know about the manufacturing process.
The way you said it implied if I was to buy a £100 Linsar or Grundig set, it would give exactly the same performance as a £300 Panasonic set, which is demonstrably untrue. I'm not denying what you said, but it's important to put it in perspective, or there will be people coming on here expecting the Soga to save them because they bought a Technika thinking it'd be every bit as good as a Pioneer Kuro because "they're made by the same people."
Same panels, same speakers, same backlights (in some cases) but the software can make a huge difference.0
