Hello
Just got myself a little Asus Eee701 running Linux. What I would like to know is
1 How to upgrade the old version of Firefox to 3.6
2 How to install Google Earth
I have looked at some older posts on the subjects above.......but they all seem to be over the top of my head ! If someone would very kindly take the time to help and put it in an easy to follow format or point me in the right direction to a web page or Youtube tutorial it would be very much appreciated.
Also how do I find out which version of Linux is running on my m/c ?
David

Well, for the first question, there's an easy way (which may not work), and a hard way.
The first way is to let your package manager handle it. Not sure which distro Eee PCs use, or what package manager they come with, but it's usually fairly easy to update a package through it (and some distros will update automatically). The only problem with this is that it relies on the latest version being in the repository (the store online where all the packages for your distro are kept).
If the latest version isn't in the repository, then you'll have to install it manually, the problem with this is compatibility with your distro/system won't be guaranteed.
If you want to do it manually, instructions can be found at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Installing+Firefox+on+Linux - you'll need to be comfortable using terminal to do this
Now to point 2, installing Google Earth. This should be fairly straightforward, download the Linux version of Google Earth, it comes as a .bin file. You might be able to execute this directly, if not then open a terminal window, navigate to the folder containing the file and type
chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
The first command sets the permissions on the file to be executable, the second will run it. A GUI installer should then load0 -
Apparently someone has also provided a script to update Firefox on the Eee, so you can give that a go, seems like the easiest option

It's probably Xandros.
Click on 'Settings' then see if there's a 'System Info' section.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -

Should normally all update via the update manager0 -
I agree with all comments here. You should be able to use the package manager system provided to get the latest software. If you can't and you still want to get the latest beta, you should be prepared to get more familiar with the command line.0

The Medibuntu repository offers most common media software - you just have to enable the repository as described in this article

And this one is useful to http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2009/03/20/how-to-install-google-earth-5-on-ubuntu/0 -

The link leads to an article named 'How-to Install Google Earth 5 on Ubuntu'.
So yes, it will be useful for anyone who wants to install Google Earth 5 on Ubuntu.
The OP hasn't determined yet which operating system is used on his Asus Eee701.

Xandros/LinpusMy very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -

I resurrected my old 701 and gave it to my father recently.
The default Linux install is quite old and out of date.
I put a copy of Crunchbang linux on the machine, and it seems to suit the low powered machine really well.
My father can skype, google earth, and use firefox on it without problems.
Give it a try? You can boot it off an usb stick easily.0
