I found out yesterday that my brother has been hiding post form me and I suddenly have a debt of £594 for council tax which was supposed to be included in the rent I pay him. It's in my name so got to now pay it myself. I have just lost all the money I have saved for my holiday (first one in 6 years) and so gutted as had to tell my lil girl we can't go on holiday coz mummy has no money. I can't believe I have worked so hard to pay off my debts and am back in debt again. Sorry just wanted to vent my anger.

Sorry Nikki - I'm not sure what you can do about this - but some stern words are due to the brother. What has he done with your cash? :mad:Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0

So who's name is the house in?0 -
the council tax is in my name and i pay him rent but due to him being family (right now I am using that term very loosely) we don't have a tenancy agreement I feel so stupid I can't believe I have worked so hard to have a summer holiday abroad and paid all my debts and it's all goneDebts

Why are you so ready to pay for your brother's dishonesty? You should at least speak to him before you pay it, and demand the money. He may be feeling guilty and come to an arrangement with you. If not, then pay the council tax and move out. And if you have a rental agreement which states the CT is included in the rent, sue him.
Too many people on these boards let people get away with stealing from them. And it's usually close family and friends. Get away.My Debt Free Diary I owe:
July 16 £19700 Nov 16 £18002
Aug 16 £19519 Dec 16 £17708
Sep 16 £18780 Jan 17 £17082
Oct 16 £178730 -

Is the house in his name though?0 -
I have talked to him he doesn't have the money he can't pay it and all I can see right now is that it's going to effect my credit rating which was just starting to improve after a lot of hard work I was all happy last week as my bank said I was only 7 points off getting a current account which they told me to would take me about 6 months to make up as I was managing my bank account fine. The good thing is I have enough food in the freezer to last me a month and I will be ok just was so gutted to tell my 7 year old there will be no holiday I was thinking of trying to get a tent and go camping in the 6 weeks holiday at least it would be somethingDebts

I could be wrong (I usually am) but I always thought the Council tax was based on the property value/type so surely the owner or the person who rents the property would be liable for the council tax and not a lodger so to speak.
How come you ended up with the council tax in your name?:A0 -
Others may correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that council tax affects your credit score.
The council will probably let you pay the arrears off monthly - is there any way you could afford to pay a little each month to the arrears and still save up for your holiday?
If it is your brothers name on the mortgage / tennancy agreement of the property, I would also get down the council offices tomorrow and get your name off the council tax and his on it so that you are no longer liable for it.0 -
It was in my name as last year I was at college and on benefits and they paid my housing and council tax then after doing my course I was offered a job last July and came off benefits so it has stayed in my name but the agreement was when I started working all my bills would be included which included my electric, oil, water and council. I need to ring all the other bills tomorrow and make sure they have been paid so the worse I can be is nothing has been paid since July and I owe loads I don't know about and at best I owe the council. Unfortunately I'm not really a lodger as I pay rent and my house is separate to his.Debts
