Sounds like everything isn't right here. I got quite high bills for electricity where I live. I took the meter readings and they cut a lot of my bills. Then the cuts just mystically disappeared. I know I should call the company, but haven't had time just yet.

Sure you didnt put in the tenths in the reading i.e. 12345 instead of 1234.5 were you ignore the 5. That would make the bill 10 times what it should be.

Can you post the start and finish readings please? Forget the cost for now, what you need to establish is the actual units used and then convert to kwh.
Is the meter m3 or ft3?
    What's your kwh rate?

OK, 1786 units. But is the meter cubic ft or cubic m?. You can't convert to kwh without knowing that first.
Could you explain 'general' tariff? If you mean standard tariff, that's the most expensive option of all.
The rate will be shown on your bill, something around 2.4p/kwh?
Edit: even assuming cu ft meter, that many units should 'only' cost £1,500 on the cheapest tariff. So I would suspect a false meter reading.
