It will write to almost anything DVD+R, +RW, -R, -RW and CDR it wont write to DVD RAM.
As for the PC your buying it has a dual core processor the big diference between XP home and Pro that affects you is that XP home isnt multi threaded or in otherwords it doesnt support dual processors. and a dual core processor is 2 processors in a single chip so XP home is of little use in a dual core system. I cant understand why Dell sell dual core systems with XP Home0 -

Most dvd writers should burn to cds as well. DVD RAM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd_ram is mostly used (or was) for DVD recorders (ie the kit you plug into your tv). Not many dvd writers for pc support writing to dvd ram (luckily mine does ASUS DRW-1608PS3). But unless you've got a camcorder/dvd recorder that records to DVD RAM, it's not that important to have on pc."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

You have received a reply, alot of the older DVD recorders used DVD RAM the first panasonic drive I installed used them 8/9 years ago. As stated they are not really of any use now when it comes to PC's but are very good if your talking when it comes to a DVD recorder for the TV as they allow timeslip recording where you can start watching half way through the recording and it continues to record till the end. dvd cam corders also use them.
Any DVD writer will write to CDR.0
