Sorry UK2010 but your talking rubbish and confusing the issue.
    1) £10 in 1p's isn't legal tender as pointed out
    2) Trying to buy goods with legal tender is different from paying a debt in legal tender
    3) You are not entitled to change when paying a shop or a debt, it's up to you to find the right money.

If you want to accept a cheque written on toilet paper for paying a debt, and you know somewhere that will cash it, then that's up to you, but you don't have to.
You say it's legally binding but accepting it isn't. Genuine legal tender on the other hand...

Pendulum, when your dad insisted on paying with these two £5 coins was he,or anyone, able to pay in any other way, card, cheque, other cash?.If so,did anyone offer alternate payment?.

The £5 coins are legal tender whether you have other means to pay or not, so your question is irrelevant in my view.

As you have chosen not to answer I am going to assume the answer is yes.Your dad engineered the situation. He took the coins with him hoping to get the reaction he got.I expect you had been to the resturant before and he felt comfortable there. He ate his meal and chose to amuse himself by presenting these coins. No doubt delighted the manager had taken the bait he made the most of it by refusing to pay in another way.You say you are satisfied with how you and your dad handled the situation.By smugly thinking you looked good?.The manager was clearly angry and frustrated at being forced into this charade. He had to deal with you with his hands tied.At worst your dad could be asked to leave and not return.(I am sure if the police had threatened arrest he would have paid very quickly). The manager,at worst risked losing his job and career.Did you have a grudge agaist him?.Did he deserve to be used for your entertainment?.I can imagine the disapointed look on your dads face the next time he tries this nonsense elsewhere and the coins are accepted without question.Wheres the fun in that. You should try arguing about the legal status at the turnstile of your local football match. Its unlikely the queue behind would find it amusing.
The question is relevent .This site exists to help people make the most of their money not to promote timewasting, attention seeking behavior by bored customers involving unwilling participents that clearly have more worthwhile things to do.

Quite wrong really, dad took the coins with him because as a coin dealer he gets quite a lot of them in, and he just wants to spend them. Much like if you had a lot of £2 coins in your wallet, taking up space, you would want to spend them to get rid of them, wouldn't you? He put the coins on top of the bill in the tray along with a tip, and it was only as we walked towards the car park that we were chased and stopped, we hoped we'd just be able to walk out. You can say we brought the coins along for an argument, but you don't know us and your totally wrong, we brought the coins along to spend, to pay with. You can say we were being awkward but we think the manager was, we told him they were legal tender but he was having none of it. Would you like being rudely accused of paying with monopoly money when you actually paid with legal tender? Would you then happily change the coins for something else when the manager doesn't ask but demands you do so? You might, but we'd rather hold our ground and stick up for ourselves, thanks.

If you don't accept legal tender for a debt, then you don't get paid. Simple. Your call.

If i had a five pound coin in my possesion i to would use it,the manager must have known that it would have been exchanged at the bank, its not as if the bank would have said this is no good im sorry but you have lost £10.00.

What is legal tender is quite an issue,is using a Scottish note in England allowed? that has been one that has stumped me,i have been given scottish money in change before but i have always asked the cashier for English currency because i dont know if it will be refused elsewhere.

I was also once in a public house and tried to pay with a £50.00 note and was refused,i really did not have anything else on me apart from two fifty pound notes, luckily this was in a high street and i told the bar staff i would not be long and went to a local bank and exchanged them for smaller notes.

It just seems silly that the bank of England issues these large notes and there are certain outlets that will not accept them,i know its due to high cases of forgery however they have the testers now.

Except when police end up being called and the argumentative one ends up looking like a pernickety !!!!!! :)

Hahahahahahaha!!!! That really made me laugh out loud. Regardless of the fact that the OP certainly appears to just be seeing the whole situation as a bit of fun, which is fair enough!
