I received a letter today from HMRC asking me to confirm my details as the records they hold are different to that of my employer.
Why we have sent you this form: Your employer has recently submitted their payroll records to us. We have sent this letter because the address your employer holds is different to that which we hold....We need you to confirm your personal details to enable us to update your National Insurance record.
Are you supposed to notify the National Insurance Contributions office (or any other tax related office) when you change address? I'm in my 30's and have never once informed them of a change of address, I do keep my details up to date with my employer. I've lived in about 7 different houses since the age of 18

It is not mandatory ... but it may be in your interest to do so.0

Your employer will not inform HMRC of any change of address. That is your responsibility...
HMRC might find out if you change job but would not know in any other circumstance.0 -

My work has the correct address - the letter said they are writing to the address my work have as they presume it to be the most up to date.
I didn't purposely not tell them, it just never occured to me that I would need to. I thought they took all the info from the tax office who have the correct info as they take taxes from my wages so know where I work, live etc
I'm wondering why this is the first time I've had one of these letters, I've been working for 15 years and have never told them of a new address so surely every time they check payroll info from employers they would see that the employers address for me (the correct one) and the one they have is different yet I've never been contacted before.0 -
Are you sure the letter came from HMRC?
What personal details are they asking you to give?
Do they want them over the phone?0 -

I'm happy the letter is genuine, it comes with a pre-addressed envelope to HMRC, National Insurance Contributions office in Newcastle.0

Just to confirm, it is your responsibilitry to notify HMRC of your new address when you move. It is not your employer's job.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thanks, I didn't think my employer would tell them as such, more that the info was taken electronically from the electoral roll or payroll info. It never even occured to me that I might have to inform them every time I've moved!0
