Thanks, I didn't think my employer would tell them as such, more that the info was taken electronically from the electoral roll or payroll info. It never even occured to me that I might have to inform them every time I've moved!

to be honest i wouldnt have thought about telling them if i moved either

My work has the correct address - the letter said they are writing to the address my work have as they presume it to be the most up to date.

I didn't purposely not tell them, it just never occured to me that I would need to. I thought they took all the info from the tax office who have the correct info as they take taxes from my wages so know where I work, live etc :o

I'm wondering why this is the first time I've had one of these letters, I've been working for 15 years and have never told them of a new address so surely every time they check payroll info from employers they would see that the employers address for me (the correct one) and the one they have is different yet I've never been contacted before.

The tax office don't take the taxes from your wages, your employer does, using the tax code HMRC tell them to use. HMRC only refer to you by your name and national insurance number when they correspond with your employer. Your employer then sends your tax and national insurance with all their other employees deductions in bulk during the tax year.
At the end of the tax year they then send in their annual return detailing all their employees and what their total pay, tax and national insurance figures are. HMRC only then notice a difference between their record and the information your employer sends and thats why they are writing to you now.

It's best not to rely on an employer to inform HMRC of an address change since they only write to them and include your details at the end of the tax year or when you leave and they issue a P45.

I thought the same till I started working for the civil service, when you eventually reach state pension age a letter goes out, and it is to the last address that the contributions agency has. The tax office cannot for data protection tell the NI office that you have move which is why you have to tell them both. but is amazing the amount of calls where cusotmer complain that they don't have the letter and remember this does contain some personal info about you, and nine times out of ten it is because the cusotmer does not live at the address recorded, but like that, people don't think that they need to tell them because they assume that the tax office will tell them.

This is now incorrect as the new PAYE system is directly linked to the NI system, so a change of address at one will automatically update the other.

As for not telling HMRC when you move, why not? Would you not inform the gas and electric company when you move? It's exactly the same principle.
